FB Recruiting TBT: Looking back at Penn State and Minnesota starters as recruits

Interesting stuff. 4 star team verses 3 star team. I don't think you can be called a "great recruiter" if you lose to a team laden with 3 star talent, there's got to be more to recruiting than just how many 4 and 5 stars you bring in. Better win this one.

Franklin is not a great recruiter. Never has been really. He is a very good recruiter but his overarching philosophy is lacking. He has clear preferences for a very specific style of football, but lacks the recruiting chops to bring in the talent needed play that style so we end up with major holes in the roster or a serious misfit in talent/approach. This occurs on both sides of the ball. Franklin has the preference for guys that share his philosophy but he can't provide the talent. The portal has made his approach even more of a liability. Last year, I picked us to go 7 and 5 and even when we were highly ranked, I didn't back away from it. This year, I thought we would take a step forward on offense and a step back on defense and picked us to go 7 and 5 or 8 and 4. Well, right now, 8-4 looks like the most likely outcome. All of our weaknesses were exposed at Michigan. Not all opponents can exploit them simultaneously but sans Rutgers, everyone we play is capable of exploiting enough to win outright (Minnesota, Ohio State) or make it a game in the fourth quarter (Indiana, Maryland, Michigan State) and we all know what Franklin's record is against teams that are in the ball park talent wise which is everyone we play the rest of the year sans Rutgers.
