Obviously, new to this message board... (message boards in general).. but I've sat on the sidelines long enough.. .and as we go into senior night to give a well deserved standing -O to everyone (coaches, teammates, parents, friends, fans) that had anything to do with their success, I figured the timing makes sense to show my own gratitude toward this message board as well.... I check this board way too often throughout the day... every 5 minutes...and every 5 seconds during PSU matches... (and every 2 seconds the day Mark Hall signed;)..

Thank you to all who contribute to what has become my main source of personal entertainment.. (unathletic, middle-aged husband to a pregnant wife and 2 year old will do that to you;)

I probably won't contribute much in terms of my own input, simply because i'm not nearly as knowledgeable as any here.. (and frankly, overly intimidated by you all).. But I'm a wrestling fan.. back from my glory days as a below- average lightweight wrestler at Dallastown High School for coach Dave Gable to a PSU & Temple grad... Back then, Ty Moore, Joey Wildason and Sanshiro Abe were my idols..... btw.. Whatever happened to Ty?

My putrid athletic talent would never sniff a D1 College Room, but it has never stopped me from being in complete awe for anyone who can balance college academics and sports.. Anybody... whether you are a 4xer or practice room guy... my hat is off to all of them... regardless of team, conference or era... (yes, even Iowa..)

Anyways - thanks to each of you in what you do in making this such an entertaining source of all things wrestling (and beyond).. - You are all hilarious as much as you are experts in the best sport of them all... And I wanted each of you to know that there are a slew of "closet" people like me who appreciate your ongoing dedication to PSU and more importantly, the sport of wrestling.

Go Lions!

Like your handle and like the pic. Cool. I am intimidated many times as well as I lack the knowledge of many here and lack the time to learn more. Have found this board very informative. I learn something everyday here. Welcome.

Haha.. Absolutely agree.. Although I have been reading this board for years now, and almost afraid to "alter" my preconceived thoughts on what each of you look and sound like.. Its all good, but will take a bit of adjustments on my behalf;)
I'm going to make it up to Nationals.. Hopefully meet (and celebrate) with everyone then..
Thanks guys for the warm welcome.. There isn't much that immediately bonds random folks like wrestling does..

Thanks El Jefe.. I did hear something about this but never researched it,beyond that.. It is sad.. Way too soon.. Wonderful wrestling family and juggernaut of a wrestling school back in the day.. I still remember his win over Brad Silimperi.. His genuine joy and jumping into his coaches arms was priceless.. RIP Ty..

Which one, finals freshman year or junior year finals? What shocked me was a 3x finalist (2nd twice to moore) did not place his senior year.

His freshman campaign... Just pure emotion... No YouTube back then, so remember catching it on one of the public channels and only saw it once.... .. To think of the Ty Moore's wrestling in this age of video/social media scouting...Geesh.. I would never have. stepped on the same mat as him;)

So ironic that you mentioned that you went to Dallastown, Ankle Pick. Can you PM me and mention who you are. I graduated in 1987 from Susquehannock and I know that you graduated after me as Coach Bence was the historic coach of Dallastown before coach Gable. Coach Bence was as opposing as was his loaded teams.

I wrestled a Dallastown wrestler to get into Districts and I was hoping for a moment... it wasn't you. I was a light weight also... but have grown slightly since our wrestling days. Ty Moore was a rock star in the state of PA when I wrestled and I was extremely shocked and dismayed at his passing. A brilliant human being on the mat that I revered from afar. For what it's worth... Joey Wildason was one of my wrestling partners going into Districts and I never had a more incredible time wrestling anyone... than my time wrestling with Joey. He was a virtuoso on the mat and I was constantly defending his next move which came rapid fire.

Thanks for joining the family of wrestling enthusiasts who share the passion for wrestling... here. We love all of our brothers... as Ty was to the PA wrestling community. He was a great one and his exploits will never be forgotten. The tribute by his brother was one of desperate love and compassion for his brother... he never wanted to lose. Ty will always be remembered as a big league champion in the state of PA. He was a rock star who's talents seemed to transcend his body. Though he's no longer with us... His memories are. I thank God for that and the love his brother had for him to give him such a fitting tribute. He was master of FUNK. I don't think anyone could out funk in his day... a master of funk. RIP Ty.

welcome ankle pick! nothing to be intimidated about - you've already contributed! couple of notes of the above comments... agree with support of any of these d1 athletes - especially the wrestlers. The dedication is unbelievable and as such not many kids their age would even consider - diet, practice, conditioning.... on and on and on....
Finally, early funk - Wade Schalles....

A_mschaffer... Wade Schalles on his own web site is known as the Father of Funk Wrestling. There is no doubt. Schalles could pin from anywhere.

I had the distinct pleasure of getting to sit and eat with Master Funk Schalles for three days of the 2011 in Philadelphia. Secret story that no one knows. During our lunch breaks in the upper levels of the Wells Fargo Center... Mr. Schalles and Nate Carr were the special master of ceremony speakers during breaks in the rounds of Nationals. Wade and I would have deep conversations about the tourney and it's possible outcome. Being a PA guy... Wade being the highly cerebral guy that he is... had a flow chart on possible match ups and possible winners and point outcomes of those wins. I followed Wade's individual predictions the entire three days that we ate together along with Nate Carr.... but he would never show me his team prediction until the last day. I was talking with Wade and we talked about many match ups... but he never ever allowed me to see his lap top screen which I made me ever more curious as to his predicted team winner.

The last day Wade turns to me, with a huge grin on his face... he shows me what's been killing me for three days. He had predicted PENN STATE to beat Cornell with 103 TEAM PTS. Penn State actually scored 103.5 and won what was the beginning of 4 titles in a row. But Wade Schalles became more of a LEGEND that day to me than he was already. I'll never forget him teasing me those three days... and then with a huge Wade Schalles smile and a wink... and his shiny bald head glimmering... turn his lap top around showing me his lap top screen for the first time... to show me he predicted PENN STATE to be on top with 103 pts before the tournament ever took place. Knowing the entire time... I was a "closet" Penn State fan. o_O Wade was an unbelievable person, a World Class human being to be around for those three days (as was Nate Carr).

When I was mat side... I got to sit next to Teyon Ware a 2 time NCAA champion from Oklahoma who was wrestling with the NLWC at one point and Shane Sparks, current BTN mat reporter. Both were doing in arena announcing from the table I was at.

I also got to the see the Iowa and Penn State coaches exchange pleasantries you wouldn't teach to your kids. Lol All one big moment of a lifetime. Never miss Nationals. It's on a level, unbeknownst to anything I've ever witnessed. You'll have memories to last an entire lifetime.

Great story! Schalles was my hero growing up. Loved Clarion and went to wrestling camp there about 100 times it seems.

I don't recall which NCAA tournament it was but Schalles also said that if PSU could ever convince a world class coach to come to State College they would become a dominant force and win multiple National Chamionships. Another nice prediction!

i went to camp up there as well (2nd day morning walk was always difficult as legs were quite sore!) as HS coach was Bubb's asst (N. Turner).. had some good memories of Pete Morelli when he was going there as well....

I graduated from Dallastown with Dave Gable, and was roommates two years with Dave Brenneman, our HWT, who later was in the room at Penn State.

Wow..love the dallastown roots here.. I wrestled for Coach Bence as a freshman and Coach Gable from 10-12.. Again, even as 3 year starter, i was never very good, but love the sport and remember getting beat on a daily basis in the room.. Always way tougher than most anyone I wrestled in matches..
Amalone, can't say enough about your guts to have wrestled with Wildasin all those years.. Major props... I missed ya by a few years.. I graduated in 1991.. .. And your right.. Bence was rather intimidating..
