Bill O'Brien is viewed as a superior coach here at Penn State by many fans. You hear all the time about how things would be different if Bill was still here. Bill had the toughest job ever, he had sanctions dropped on his head, he had to deal with keeping a team together with the ability to leave with no penalty. He had to do it with no conference championships or post season to play for. That is a damn tough job and he did a great job with it. He held this program together when it could have crumbled to the ground. That makes him a hero to me.
Bill also inherited a very good team, a team with great talent on the offensive line. A number of those guys are playing on Sunday. He also had one of the best receivers in college football. He had a QB that was a 5th year senior who is still in the NFL. He had a lot of veteran talented powerful guys who controlled the team from the inside. He won 15 games at Penn State and although the sanctions were felt the roster was still in pretty decent shape. He lost some games that make you scratch your head. He won a couple good ones too. He had one of the worst defenses I have seen at Penn State and we took our worst beating ever at the shoe. He showed signs of greatness coaching but also pissed a couple games away we should have won.
Franklin took over, the roster was depleted and it had to take it on the run. It was a mess and he knew what he was getting into and what the expectations were. The. Money was there for him at Vandy, the comfortable situation was there too. He put his neck out and took a job that wasn't very attractive and he knew it. For that he is a hero too. He also has lost some games he should have won, there have been signs of good and there have been bad. The defense is in a much better spot and we are crawling out of the depleted roster now.
Franklin has 1 less win at 14 with a roster in much worst shape.
On this thanksgiving I am thankful for both of there guys because regardless of how it all plays out, this program should have fell apart and it didn't because of these 2 guys effort.
