Thanks for one of the greatest visual and emotional experiences in all of sports - the White Out.
Thanks for the great effort. For a team that struggled to stop AS and even Pitt in the first half, I was amazed at the effort, the game plan, the coaching calls that put this team in a position to win. This staff has brought this inexperienced defense along very quickly considering the number of new starters and losing a couple of DEs the week before the season started.
The last play was a kick in the gut and not what I would have called as if I'm any kind of expert. I saw Shorter in the game on 3rd down and I was expecting maybe an underneath fade or something. That said, OSU is a great team with according to blue chip weightings, has talent that is only equaled by Alabama. This was demonstrated by the fact that OSU had a great DE out but he was replaced by the top DE recruit 2 years ago, Chase Young. Penn State is now at the level that they can play with anyone but still lacks the top to bottom depth to be top 4. Within a year they will pass Michigan on talent depth and are closing the gap rapidly with the top tier. This team has played OSU to the limit away and at home with less talent. I can criticize the last play all I want, but I can't criticize the coaching overall and the ability to motivate a team that played like they did last night.
Sure there were a ton of mistakes made. OSU dropped passes too and I don't think their coaching staff demonstrated brilliance last night even though they made some nice adjustments in the second half. Our punting hurt us at times while theirs was excellent. They made a championship saving 96 yard drive. We had the final chance. Lots of drama and opportunities.
Is this a game Penn State should have won? You bet. Would I have felt better if McSorely missed a pass on 4th down and they still lost? Maybe, but not so much. It was still a great game. If Penn State had won that game, many would be saying that the baton is being passed to a new Big 10 top dog. Instead, we will be living with what could have been. However, I still think it was a great game for recruiting. Any recruit there sees how close this team is and what an experience to play here. Franklin fell short of beating a more talented team, but the gap is closing and OSU knows it. This is good for the Big 10. When the season started I felt like 3-4 losses were likely. I still feel that way but this team is making good progress and will be a fine team by season end.
While I will be sick about the way this game ended for long, long time, I have really enjoyed watching Penn State football for the last several years. Thanks Penn State.
