If anyone doubts this, consider what happened when Vice President Joe Biden wanted to run for president in 2016 to carry on the legacy of the term-limited president he served. Obama reportedly told him he shouldn’t run and backed former secretary of state Hillary Clinton instead.

This episode reportedly weighs heavily on Biden and shapes his relationship with Obama to this day.

When Biden finally did run in 2020, he began as the front-runner but came in fourth in Iowa and fifth in New Hampshire, finishing behind Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, an independent who was flirting with socialism, and the mayor of South Bend, who was born well into Biden’s second term in the Senate.
