to opposing teams.

Late in the 3rd quarter. 3rd and 7 from midfield. The play call? A run for a loss of 1 yard.

Mid 3rd quarter. Penn State puts together maybe their best drive of the season. Cain puts on a show. The Pitt defense looks gassed. What do our coaches do? Sit him for the rest of the game.

The one I can't get over was the 3rd and 4 near the end of the game. A first down pretty much finishes off Pitt. A quick little pass to a tailback is all it takes. But Rahne calls a deep shot down the right sideline with about 1 percent chance of success. Heck, he could have just had Clifford take a knee and had about the same chance of making the first down -- but that would have at least forced Pitt to take their last timeout.

It is not even possible to come up with a worse play call for that situation.

Rahne just keeps making unbelievably stupid decisions at big moments. This one didn't cost them the game but it very well could have. I just can't understand it. Makes me wonder if this is someone who is too smart for their own good -- too cerebral. The common sense part of Rahne's brain doesn't work very well when the game is on the line. Maybe he's overthinking things.

Let us suppose that once in a great while, a play like that could catch the defense off guard and could be a game winning play...but to your point such a play call wasn't surprising at all; it was almost predictable (if that is even possible in the given scenario lol).

Also, if such a play DID truly catch the defense off guard, the WR would be wide open; it wouldn't be contested. Even if the play is called and the deep surprise is the first look, if the defense is not clearly and obviously fooled then the play should quickly move to progression #2.

And there it is. Just like running Sanders on 4th and 5 COULD have worked.

Choosing the wrong play looks brilliant and plays the surprise card when opposing defenses expect you to run one of many smart plays. No sense in requesting a show of hands of those who expect smart play calling by Rahne in the 4th with the game hanging in the balance.

Franklin addressed this in his post game presser. A player ran the wrong play. It wasnt supposed to be a deep pass. I know its reflex around here to blame everything on Rahne, but this one was actually addressed by the head coach.

What I don’t understand about that play, is they kept Friermuth in to block which was ridiculous considering he’d be the guy I would get the ball to in that situation. Friermuth didn’t sustain the block and Clifford was rushed to throw that awful pass. Unless Friermuth was supposed to run a pattern and forgot, it’s asinine that they chose to keep him in to block

Wait. If I remember the play correctly, the ball was thrown to an empty spot was it not? The receiver ran a shorter route. The ball was thrown to the deep spot. Hence it seems as if the deep route was called.

I think James is covering for his friend and OC. I rewatched a bit of the game last night. Sean was clearly looking down field immediately with his drop. I believe the route may have been wrong but not it’s depth

In contrast Pitt called a perfect play fake on 4th down where they faked the run and threw over the middle. We were fortunate that didn't go for a touchdown.
