The morning after…

Sitting at the gate to my flight back to Chicago surrounded by domers.

I’m split between, this is Franklin’s ceiling let’s move on and Michigan got embarrassed by TCU in 2022 and then funneled that experience into their 2023 run.

I'm not defending Franklin, but.....game came down to a few plays- bad pass on right play when Allar missed singleton in the first quarter (cost us 4 points): bad bounce on the fumble Carter could have had right before the ND first half field goal drive (3 points): defender slips and receiver goes free for TD (7 points). I'm not sure what Franklin could have done in any of these instances.

It always does? How are we doing in such games? Who is accountable for the results?

There is your answer.

Yeah. Dammit if Franklin could just stop falling down and letting a WR score an easy TD after going up 7 with less than 8 minutes to go and throwing a pick in a tie game with less than a minute to go.
Agree. Allar was bad last night. Bad mechanics and missing wide ooen receivers. The slip and fall by Miller is one of those things that can happen, can't blame the player, Allen, or CJF.

Perhaps like Michigan a few years ago there will be lessons learned and they make a run next season.

Overall it was a great season. Yes, it is bitter when the team gets close but diesn't close it out. Certainly the players and staff are very disappointed.

I think Hagans must be let go along with most of the WR room.

Gave it away. A lost opportunity with a clear path to the championship game. Who knows when this type of opportunity comes around again.

Penn State fans have to quickly change focus. We just won the national championship in volleyball and might have the best wrestling team in collegiate history. Our wrestling team will easily win another national championship. As far as football goes, we exceeded expectations. We made the playoffs and won two playoff games. We made the final 4.

All is well! We have plenty to be proud of.

These games always come down to a few plays and they somehow never go our way…

They lost the Big Ten Championship game the same way, putting Drew in the position to make an unnecessary throw that ultimately cost us the game. Even if he completed it, it wasn’t for big yardage and was in the middle of the field so the clock keeps running. Every possible outcome from that throw was some form of bad.

Could Franklin ever do what Michigan did to us last year and just straight up refuse to pass?

I slept 3 hours last night due to anger from that game and I’m sitting at home this morning!
I used to get that way after a big loss. I recall almost going crazy after the loss to Alabama with the 3 runs into a stone wall. Then one day I spent some time walking around Penn State's practice field talking to players at a Blue White game. These are just children! I am putting my emotions and happiness into the hands of children! Doesn't make any sense.

I feel no differently about these games in middle age versus when i was 18 years old. I am very happy in my life with the wife and kids and great career. But I am passionate about and especially PSU football! This one will sting for years, even knowing that we would’ve been mauled next week versus OSU who is clearly the best team in college football.

Think back. Even in the B1G championship year, we gave away a big lead in the Rose bowl. In many of our big l Iosses since then, we have been unable to protect a 4th qtr leads. TOUGHNESS. Maybe Franklin is too nice and needs to channel coach BOB. Our defense could have held after the interception like ND's did in the previous series. Our offense could have un out the clock with 6 minutes to go. These are common themes in our losses to top 5 teams. Grit and toughness seem to be lacking during crunch time.

All true.

Take a look at our roster and recruits. Next year's team might well be better than this year's team. We have a lot to look forward to. Also, we just won a volleyball national championship and have the best wrestling team maybe in the history of collegiate wrestling and should easily with a national championship in wrestling. We have won dozens of national championships in the past few decades. Look at a school like the pitters. They haven't won a national championship in any sport since the 1970s. Think how their fans fell every year. Some will live a lifetime without ever seeing a national championship in any sport.

As an Irish fan I'm obviously jazzed up but also a bit frustrated with PSU (I root for them too). I've been on the losing end of way too many of these games in the last 20 years with this stinking ND program.

I see a lot of Lion fans raling Allar. Yes it was a bad decision on his part at the end there but that kid played a heckuva game otherwise and made few mistakes. I was worried State was going to blow this game out in the first half, they looked completely in control of the game at that point.

But it is time for PSU and Franklin to part ways. I'm sorry, but that guy is an ass. From the outside, he makes rooting for psu hard at times, even though I do love the lions. PSU needs/deserves a better HC and staff at this point.

Just another nailbiter in a nice little storied history between these two programs. Can't ask for much more than what we saw last night.

I'm beyond impressed with this ND team under Freeman. This guy seems like he has the "it" factor. The players love him and play very hard for him. He's well spoken, respectful and a class act. We're glad to have him.

I used to feel this way. But the last ten years have made me more apathetic.
Every time I see our QB line up as WR, which happened like 4 times last night, I just laugh.
Makes the losses sting less.

And when OSU beats him for the third year in a row by whatever score they want, I hope that you still will like him. That team is lucky that they play a de facto ACC schedule and beat up on those hapless teams year after year.

This loss hurts. Bad. But, stepping back, the program is in its best shape since 1994. The team was in a position to win. They didn’t execute on 3 plays, ball bounced wrong on another. We win if any go our way and Domers are complaining about the same thing. Some positives long term:

- Franklin seems to have a good grasp on the transfer portal and NIL. It’s a whole different world since 2021.
- Pat Kraft knows what it takes to win. Has alignment with the coach, and administration
- 700 million Beaver Stadium renovation. Long overdue. The Playoffs brought us a lot of national visibility, on the SEC boards they were calling the Beav the Temu NASCAR track. They are not wrong.

Despite the NCAA nuking the program in 2012 after Paterno, PSU has done better than peer schools (USC, Texas) in the won / loss column after replacing legends (Caroll, Brown).

The 2013-2015 Dark Years were much better than the 2000-2004 Dark Years.

I hope you’re right. I am actually pretty jazzed that Franklin built the best oline that we have had in the 2000s. That is the foundation for success in the future. We’re gonna have to figure out WR obviously and find the next great playmaker on defense in the mold of Carter, Robinson or Parsons. Hopefully Arrington‘s kid works out.

LOL.. I slept to 9. Though I had an excuse. 3 evening budget meetings with Japan more than compensates for the late start.

Just turn the page to recruiting and spring ball. It will be spring soon enough and hope springs eternal.

Tbe sun came up this morning. We came within a hair of making the college football finals with a team lacking any wide receiver threats and a QB who picked a bad time to have his worst game. Don't use Michigan as an example of why we should be hopeful - they won by cheating and we will never stoop to that level. The coaches need to address deficiencies in the offseason. It was a highly entertaining season and this team never gave up - they have a lot to be proud of.

On to wrestling.

It's painful but if you can step back, it was a great season. This was a really good Penn State team and they made the Final Four out of 134 in FBS.

I think this PSU team did really well considering they were not really a complete team. They didn't have anything close to a top 20 passing game -- and I mean QB and wideouts were both limited. And they -- Allar and the receivers -- really worked very hard and did the best they could with the talent they had, but there were limitations and last night the limitations caught up to them.

But why focus on the negative. This team had an awesome defense (again not what it could have been without injuries, but really really good). And this was the best O-line at PSU in decades.

The future is bright. The PSU coaching staff is really good at so many positions -- OL and DL programs are the foundation, but PSU is or is starting to be an NFL factory for safeties, corners, running backs, tight ends.

A lot of schools are great at development for 1 or 2 positions. PSU is entering the world where it's a player development factory at many positions. If PSU can fix its wideout program, that's kind of the last frontier. Fix the wideout program, QB will take care of itself because great QBs will want to come to PSU.

Next year the NCAA will allow football revenue (and PSU has a lots of it) to be used to finance NIL, which will help PSU greatly starting in 2025.

Don't know if you caught it, but at the half Franklin said they needed a balanced attack. I rolled my eyes. It seemed like he wanted to pass for the sake of passing. So to answer your question, I'm saying "no." I don't believe he possesses that mentality.

I’m apathetic, which I can’t believe after making the semis but holy shit he always finds a new rake to step on.
You blame Franklin for that? GTFOH! The guy has placed tremendous faith in Allar. He was let down.
I saw him compared to Todd Blackledge, who had really one good season.

Apathy is a good word. Losses like last night used to be so significant when PSU was still a big boy. Now, they are so commonplace with Franklin that it is who PSU has become. Mediocre. No use even stressing over it. It is what it is. This guy has turned PSU into the 90s Bills while laughing to the bank.

How many times can one coach no matter the players, qbs, or assistant coaches choke away a game when it matters?

Over a decade now of this nonsense. PSU beat no one of consequence this year. Same old story.

Morning after, I moved on last night after the final play. I was not mad , disappointed yes. Blame can be thrown at a few things. Drew just did not have it last night. I think what disappointed me the most there, was that he didn't need to be elite in this game, just sound and mistake free and he was not. I really thought that the plan would be to run the ball at the end, maybe get Tyler involved a little, be safe, be sound, see what you could get playing your game and then if need be play in overtime. Obviously pounding the ball was working, so I figured worse case your shortening the field in OT and we were having success stopping the run and you were running the ball on them, you just let it play out. Also in the first half field goal I would have ran 2 more times and tried to score or pin them deep. I sat there and thought there is no WAY , they stop the run 4 times in a row and if they do, I thought the defense was looking good and putting them on the 1-2 yard line was in our favor, but taking the points is by all accounts is what you do there. That didn't happen and that is why I'm not a football coach, cause it must not of made sense.

I hope Franklin figures out that he actually built a very capable power running team! No need for so much cutesy plays next year.

Bully ball is the way. It’s the best running game since Saquon, and overall better as Saquon was being Saquon for a lot the time.

Saquon would have had an additional 2 yards per carry with this oline!
