The "Pipeline"

Heh, Tom probably has no idea how many people he just pushed into the grassy knoll.

I'm sure a lot of coaches could make the same type of statement that TB made, regarding recruits that they have discussed with Jody.

The thing that cracks me up is people act as though Jody has some sort of moral obligation to remain neutral. If he believes a kid would benefit from going to Iowa and he makes his opinion known to the kid and his family. So what?

He DOES have an obligation to remain neutral. ALL coaches at that level do. When they send kids to specific places, like Brandon Wimbush's coach did, then they are shills.

Not really. What if he knows that Iowa (or any other place) is just not the place for that specific kid, parents, or personality? He is a club coach. His job is to not only train the kids on the mat but to give his opinion as he sees it depending on the individual at the next level.

Some kids went to PSU (and other places) and were successful and it got noticed and Iowa started being regulars there. Until then, none of the Young Guns went to Iowa so I find it hard to figure how he was steering them. I would make jokes that TnT needed to rent property near the area and be up there a lot. They did and it has worked for them.

I believe most young men and the family make the choice based on where they fit from a financial standpoint and the type of atmosphere they feel they will find at a school. Iowa is going to get a fair share of talent because of tradition and current standing. OSU, tOSU,PSU, and Iowa seem to get most of the very top kids. ASU, Mizzu,VTech and others are creeping in more and more. I expect Cael will be able to pluck the majority of the top PA. guys he really wants. To my knowledge Spencer Lee is the first one he has actually wanted really bad and not landed. There is so much talent in PA. you simply can't keep them all. Seems like the right guy could take over the Pitt program and have an instant contender. Say a Terry Brands or Casey Cunningham. This would give you spoiled fans something to actually worry about.

No he does not have a moral obligation to remain silent nor neutral. His obligation is to himself and the kids he trains. He owes no specific loyalty to Penn State, Iowa nor any other institution. His club is independent and so is he.

With that said. I have no idea what exactly Jody communicates to his kids nor at this point do I care. However, my grandson is set to begin his second season of wrestling and as he progresses I would expect to be able to communicate with his different coaches and get straight answers. 10 years from now if he were to develop into a kid with division 1 skills I would venture to guess if I ask Quentin, Patakey or Strittmatter what they thought of several different options I would get answers that would be genuine and honest. I certainly would not expect, "I can't say for fear of offending a team's fanbase."

As I originally posted. The idea Jody Strittmatter is to maintain some sort of impartiality is ridiculous.

Just watch some interviews of Jody. He wants nothing but the best for his guys no matter where they go to college. Its clear he loves what he does. I bet he has had many Head coaching offers as of late. Keep doing what your doing coach!

Pitt is a sleeping giant that could with the right hire and administrative support do what Penn State and Ohio State have done in recent years.
However, to expect Pitt to somehow put good hire together with administrative support is almost the equivalent of expecting a western sunrise.

You misspelled comatose. Maybe they'll improve to sleeping once they climb to 5th in the 6-team ACC.

Yeah, it's big-time wrestling folks, who cares. Cael is the best recruiter in the game.

Pitt...they will always lose the top guys to Penn State or Ohio State, unless if they get a coach more appealing than Sanderson or Ryan, and whoever eventually replaces them, so it's not happening any time soon (this century?)

History shows that recruiting rankings often aren't accurate. I personally couldn't care less how many #1 recruits we get out of high school. I measure how many AA's, National Champs, and National Championships we ring up.

Of course there is SOME correlation between top recruits and college success but I'll betting on the PSU coaching staff and their ability to mold champions over a high school ranking any day of the week.

Who's the next highly rated recruit for Young Guns? I only know of Lee and Teasdale. Was the 2019 recruit you guys picked up from Young Guns too?

A club coach has the obligation to put his kids in the best situation that he can. If he doesn't do that, he won't have top-level kids for very long. Expose them to all, explain the options thoroughly to the kid, using your knowledge and background to give them advice and counsel when asked from that point.

Murin, Verkleeren, and Woodley are the next national-level recruits coming out of Western PA. I could be wrong but am unaware of PSU having more than a passing interest in either.

Busiello is from Long Island, so not in Young Guns.

Yeah, I don't think Cael will be recruiting any of those very hard. I mean, aside from Lee, were there any Young Guns that Cael lost out on? I honestly can't think of any Young Gun that we lost to another school that Cael didn't bring in someone I'd have rather had anyway. Hell, for all we know, Suriano may turn out to be a career 125 and even better than Lee. I seriously doubt Cael lost any sleep over any of them including Lee.

There's a difference between a coach being neutral and a coach being objective. I am very comfortable saying that all coaches should be objective when advising their athletes about their options at the next level. But, as some posters have pointed out, it's not necessarily wrong -- and can be very helpful -- for a coach to share his knowledge and insights about certain institutions when his/her athletes are making important decisions.

Teasdale, though Busiello makes one heckuva consolation prize..

Phillippi (Virginia). Nick Lee might be better.

Not sure if Macri was in Young Guns, but 125/133 isn't an issue for us.

Dipped a toe in the water with Pletcher, but I don't think anyone was surprised to see him go elsewhere. Can't think of anyone else offhand.

Cael seems to be pretty good at this recruiting thing.

Pletcher was from Robbie Waller's All American club, but did train at one of the Young Guns club, which has multiple locations. However, Luke mostly wrestled with AA in dual tournaments. Pitbull, which used to be run by former PSU NC Sanshiro Abe, was another Pittsburgh area club that was very successful. The kids would go to Pitbull one night and then YG the next night. You see this a lot with kids these days to get exposure to different styles of coaching.

Just a hunch, but I'm guessing Pletcher would have wanted more money than what Cael was willing to offer.

My take on Pletcher is that despite being an outstanding high school wrestler (he wrestled some very good wrestlers in tight matches), I haven't seen enough from him to suggest he can separate himself from the pack at the next level. Against top competition, it was his goal to win (and not necessarily to dominate).

It certainly isn't a knock on Pletcher. I just don't expect to see similar results to that of Zain and Nolf.
