He was the second tier player on his team in the national limelight of the recruit-nic world at the time. He was a 230 lb blocking back and an all state defensive end, I believe for one year. He eventually joined a OL group loaded with first team OL high school all Americans and simply out did them all ...all the way to Canton. The best college football Guard I have ever had the opportunity to watch play the game.....he was better than even those jacked up on steroids.

Hard work will always payoff.

thankfully nobody who mattered cared about "stars" or "offers"

hopefully nobody who matters today does, either

Great story. He's doing a great job with the Steelers too.

I ran into him a few weeks ago and I couldn't believe how he shed the weight he once carried. He was actually smaller than me. Also, he was kind of hobbling along so I can only presume his knees are shot.

Per the article, he was named a high school All-American by Parade. So I'm sure he was highly regarded and sought after.

I don't see that. It does say that he was nominated by SI for its team. Doesn't say whether or not he was chosen.

"July 26, 1977 -- Sports Illustrated magazine nominates Munchak for its 1977 All-American High School Football team."

He did not make the Parade team. LINK - Parade All-America team. Mike Meade did make it though.

230 pounders that end up weighing 275-280 seldom play the same position in high school as college. Same goes for every position in the game.

Paterno used bird dogging...which is similar to what CJF does and both are scientifically based. The the bs star system....is not.

If not mistaken he wasn't the one that PSU came to evaluate at the time, it was Scranton~s running back, MM was his blocking fullback.
