An interesting story in the Post Gazette today that if the MNC was awarded based on the daisy chain method (awarding the MNC to whomever last beat the previous MNC similar to the way Boxing Championships are awarded), the current MNC of college football would be <drumbeat> none other than the University of Pittsburgh based on their 24-14 beating of the University of Miami last November.

The so-called "college football belt." There's a web-page that tracks its history (although it hasn't updated for 2017):

If you start from Nebraska owning "the belt" on 1-January-1972, this would actually be the first and only time Pittsburgh has owned "the belt." We haven't had it since we lost the 1-January-1988 Citrus Bowl to Clemson.

But I thought Michigan won half a national championship in 1997? Surely, your team would then have won "the belt" since 1988!

Wow! How cool would it be if Albany claims it to start the season next year? It might be awhile before a FBS team can get it back.
