  • Team was outplayed upfront, but overall played a pretty good game in all phases
  • Decision to be conservative and get the field goal made sense...OSU needs to score twice to beat us (and they did, of course)
  • 98/100 times you say Barrett must beat you with two TDs with his arm, you take it...his own fans were booing him and Urbs (like a pro team) with his sideline throws that netted yards but only 20 points thru 3Qs
  • Turning point was the series right after the SMiller fumble recovery, but...
  • I believe the first play was meant to be a halfback pass...OSU just blew the play up and SB was unable to launch...that may have been going for the jugular play?
  • That said, Trace took a number shots down the field - and some worked
  • We had a number of big plays - just not quite enough (especially on defense)
  • Zero turnovers
  • Made Barrett beat us with his throwing...and he did - hats off to him (some time the other team makes plays - especially when you have probably the second most talented team in the country...
  • Key injuries hurt us in areas of vulnerability...and it bit us...just don't have the depth like OSU...we were gassed in 4Q...
  • But depth is coming...in form of freshman/sophomore class and incomings
  • How soon some of us forget, we are just a few years removed from crippling sanctions...
  • Yet all the while, we never dipped below .500 (OSU has a more recent sub .500 season)
  • All that and we lost by 1 point on the road...if offense or, especially ,defense makes just one more play or OSU makes just one more mistake, we win
  • Hats off to OSU - well done.
  • But kudos to the boys (and coaches) in Blue & White!
  • Perfect game or game plan?? - Certainly not...but neither was Urban's
  • Since we have been relative healthy (post Michigan 2016), we have lost a total of two games, by 4 total points to two Top 5 teams on the road....and just two years ago, we still had significant effects from unjust sanctions
  • Not bad, not bad at all...heads up...We are!

They played lousy in the running game phase.

They had to kick the FG because the play calls were lousy for a 1st and goal at the 7 situation.

The game was lost at the line of scrimmage. They couldn't block and they couldn't get to Barrett. Maybe losing 97 and 52 exacerbated that fact or maybe it didn't, but the bottom line was tosu was better up front on both sides of the ball.

Wasn't like this game was a tit for tat or something. We were up by 18 at one point. What was different then?

Oh, I don't know...maybe their depth and talent wore our team down? Maybe momentum means something in an emotional game played by kids?

Again, what magical play was the staff supposed to call when our OL was getting pushed into the backfield all 2nd half?

Nothing. Give up I guess. Or call the same crap given the same result.

The same magical plays that got you down the field to the 7 in the first place. Not 3 straight runs up the middle. Its a clock burn by JF and JOMO like USC game and it bit them again. Why were we so good last year playing from behind? Because we had to throw the ball.

The Maddon and fantasy football veterans are out in numbers tonight. F'them. They are the same assholes who were predicting gameboy scores vs Pitt etc. They make me want to puke. I am proud of how this staff and players have played and coached since last Oct. Those who aren't can't jump off the bandwagon. They smell funny anyhow.

"Whining" about those who are "whining" is equivalent.

I've seen 5-year olds that were more mature than Midnighter.

Doubt it. At least not ones who had a few drinks during a big football game.

I never said your anger wasn't justified. Just disagree with who you're angry at.

Ok - so not coaches. Then....the NCAA for not allowing us to have similar talent? Players for not executing? Urban and OSU for just being 'better'? Need a place to focus my anger....

I don't think it was a coincidence all of calls from the 7 were up the middle. The FG unit has struggled mightily with FGAs off the hash marks.

Florida State has a roster full of 4 and 5 stars and is 2-5. Teams like Tennessee and Texas have have great recruiting classes but have struggled. The accomplish what we have done over the last 18 games is not easy and it's silly to pretend that the coaches haven't been doing a great job.

So - it's not all talent?

How about trying something other than giving Barkley the ball 2 seconds into the play and 5 yards behind the LOS?

I always find it interesting how people and groups can't handle criticism these days. I don't recall seeing anyone calling for coaches to be fired, nor blaming any players. No one's claiming to fall of the bandwagon or predicting "sky is falling" scenarios with PSU losses in the remaining season.

We have great players that make mistakes and we have great coaches who make mistakes. Playcalling the last few series sure seemed to indicate "playing not to lose" and they did.

OSU was simply better. If they hadn't had the penalties or the mistakes, they could have named their score. I thought they did a great job handling Barrett last year because he didn't have a running back that was dangerous like Zeke Elliott had been in 2015. But with Dobbins back there, you had to account for two good runners again and it seemed like they never were able to pick the correct read. And then when OSU was forced to throw, our safeties were nowhere to be found and our corners failed to locate the ball. Campbell has an easy pick on the first TD drive if he locates the ball. Instead, he commits PI on a ball nowhere near the receiver. On the first TD, AO is in perfect position but he never finds the ball and he can't swat it away. For all the talk about how good Allen is, he seems to disappear in pass coverage and is always a step late on a throw. I noticed both he and Apke when backed up against the goal line, will keep dropping back even though they're 5 yards deep. On the second quarter TD by OSU, if Apke has his feet on the goal line, he has a chance to make a better read and be in position for a swat or pick. Instead, he's still 4 yards deep in the end zone and still backing up when he makes his read and he's late. It's just so frustrating to put 38 on the board and it's not good enough. Used to, 38 was more than good enough. Now, our last 2 losses have been when we've put 38+ on the board.

As for the playcalling, it's tough to get exotic when the o-line can't keep guys off the quarterback and running back. OSU executed the Northwestern defensive gameplan but did it in turbo mode. There was one wheel route called and it was covered/Trace was under too much pressure. The Barkley Wildcat was disappointing in that he handed it off to Trace. I was hoping they'd work shorter routes into the passing tree and they did on the drive that ended with Barkley's long TD. Those seemed to work better throughout the game but curiously, Hamilton wasn't anywhere to be found. Biggest series of the game was getting nothing out of the Shareef fumble recovery. I thought that was the game right there. Go down and get another score and walk out undefeated. Then to make matters worse, the punt gets blocked and they score almost right away. On the goal line, I was fine with getting points because as the OP says, you go up 2 possessions with 6:00 left, you should be in pretty good shape. But I would have liked one look at Gesicki there to see what might have happened.

Oh well, fortunately I have friends I can visit in Indy on Big Ten Championship weekend. So the plane ticket won't go wasted.

If you want to understand Midnighter, study 21Guns. Neither have accomplished much or done anything since high school. Both live vicariously through Penn State football.

Yes. Live and die in fact. :(
