Many people keep trying to compare the situation with Ukraine and Russia to China moving large forces into Mexico. Really, really weak.

To make it a tad more accurate we would have to establish that a hundred years ago the US was taken over by an authoritarian government that outlawed private property and much more. Then they expanded to take over Mexico, which strongly resisted. In retaliation, the US intentionally starved five million people to death and drove several million more out of the country.

Then the US used WWII to expand its empire to take over all of Central America and the northern parts of Columbia and Venezuela. In order to hold these lands they would kill millions more and even build an Iron Curtain across the continent to keep people from escaping.

Then this empire collapsed and all those countries were suddenly free of the brutal oppression. These countries then started to rebuild in fits and starts. The road to democracy is a bumpy road with lots of twists and turns. Over time that evil country to the north would use its power to start recapturing some of those regions either by internal manipulation or down right military might.

If under this far more accurate scenario some distant country like China came along and offered some security it would be more than understandable if those countries accepted it. In fact, it would entirely rational and expected if those countries reached out to some super power for protection.

That’s a far more accurate analogy of the current situation. It didn’t start in 2014 over some people’s rebellion. Nor is it solely about NATO encroachment on some peace loving country with a leader that can be trusted. It’s far more complicated picture painted with a brutal history of murder and oppression.
