I have a theory as to why there is this continual melt-down from the left during the past few years. At the heart of it, I believe, is a very simple explanation. People around the world are realizing that we don't need the left anymore.

The political left (i.e. big government) was necessary hundreds of years ago. Authoritarian hierarchies that were slowly built up in the wake of the collapse of the Roman Empire helped to build up Western civilization by creating nation states and relatively stable societies. This eventually led to conditions which allowed for the Age of Exploration (for better or worse), the Renaissance, the Age of Reason and the Industrial Revolution.

But, since 1776 there has been an alternative to this model of all nations being run by a ruling class led by a king/queen or emperor. The existence of the United States provides a "right wing" alternative: representative government with limited powers and it has caught on over the past 250 years. The golden era of the left is long over and as people increasingly move more towards nationalist populism and away from communism, fascism, Islamic fundamentalism or even unchecked socialism, those on the left will continue to lash out.

In short, they are the denizens of a dying ideology. And they know it.
