If we run the table, and do so convincingly, we will have a chance at the playoffs. Ohio State will lose 2 games this season, you can take that to the bank. They are not all that good.
Recall after last year, even after losing to OSU, had we not lost to Michigan State, we would have had a very similar claim to the playoffs that OSU had (and got in) the year prior.
It’s already been established that a team does not need to win their conference to get in the playoffs. A 1 point loss to a higher ranked team that is favored is not the end of the world, nor the season.
This game may even be a blessing in disguise when we look back. It will be the game that harden Penn State’s players and coaches.

So we have a chance at the playoffs and OSU isnt that good....ok.

Thank you for your summary.
But you're saying Ohio State isn't that good yet we lost to them... So how are we going to be a playoff team... I just don't understand the mathematics behind that

I’m saying that ohio State isn’t ALL that good. I didn’t say they are not good. It’s another way of saying they aren’t as good as everyone is making it out to be.
And yes, they won. But just as my 11 year old son likes to do, it seems you didn’t look at the “show your work” portion of the mathematics, you simply looked at the final answer. Penn State was the better team on the field last night. Penn State has been the better team the last 2 times they’ve played. But it doesn’t matter. The lost.

If we win out, we have to hope Ohio State either loses twice or to the UM/MSU winner. In the second scenario, (assuming we win out and all teams in question beat the conference minnows) we would likely hold the three way division tiebreaker based on inter-division opponent record.

No, no. We’re supposed to recriminate, give up, and hate ourselves for supporting the program in the first place.

If we can't finish games, maybe we aren't that good. No one knows, but I doubt we win out. I also doubt OSU loses 2. Finally, even if both happen, a one loss Georgia, or Clemson, or Notre Dame, or Oklahoma, will get in ahead of us. Why is that so? Because we are anathema to many.

The first tie breaker is head to head. If we win out and OSU loses one game, they still go to the conference championship game. we need them to loose to both Michigan and MSU.

If UM beats OSU, and we beat UM and all 3 finish with one loss, what happens?
That being said, I don’t care about the B1G championship game. It can sometimes be more of a liability than a help.

Where are Ohio States two losses at and please don’t say Michigan??

Mental makeup and response is always huge. The team that just lost by 1 last night wins against the rest of our schedule. We all knew going in that OSU is the team which the conference is measured by. If somebody told you that we would hold them under 100 yards of offense at the half, you would have been thrilled.

I'm not saying don't be critical. You can be unhappy. I'm very unhappy. Matter of fact, the game went much different than expected, but the things we knew would hurt us ended up costing us the game. We are who we are, but we saw growth.

Unless we plan on hiring Saban or Meyer, who else do you have faith in to win this game?

OSU doesn’t play Iowa or Wisky. MSU and UM just aren’t that good.

Plus hope is OSU loses to a 2 loss team in the B1G title game and the. An 11-1 PSU might get in. But not sure PSU will have that signature win. UM, MSU and Wisky all have out of conference Ls

We now have no shot at the playoffs. We blew it last night plain and simple.
It’s a long season and a lot can happen across the landscape that is college football. A 1 point underdog loss to a highly rated team is about the best loss you can have. Others will have worse losses. Patience young grasshopper.

I do t know specifically who they will lose to, if I did I would place major bets on it. However,
I do know it’s hard to go undefeated in CF. Losses can come from the most unexpected opponents.

Making the playoffs is not the only way to judge a successful season. Going 10-1 and winning a major bowl, to me is a great season. They just have to figure out the whole blowing 4th quarter lead thing to take the next step to having consistent excellent seasons.

History suggests that if we win out we absolutely have a good chance of making the playoffs. I don’t see us winning out but I think we’re in the CFP if a one point loss to OSU is our only blemish...

Lol Ohio State is one of the best teams in the country. I’m not sure which OSU team you are watching. They play nobody worthwhile from the West. They’ll run the table and get in the playoffs as a 12-0 or 11-1 team.

Our only chance at the playoffs is if ND lost a few games (which I doubt) Clemson has a melt down. And we need Oklahoma and Georgia to gets blown out. That might open a small door if we win out.

I think the Rosebowl is in our future.

Goes to whoever’s crossover games had the highest winning percentage. Osu doesn’t play Wisconsin so they’d likely lose. Would depend on Iowa/nw/nebraska/Illinois since we both play the badgers. Would be better off if it was MSU in the three way tie as they don’t play Wisconsin so we’d almost assuredly win the tiebreak.

Osu losing the big ten championship game badly would also help if it was to a Wisconsin team we blew out. Not likely but while we are playing out hypotheticals.

My God give it up people. Last night was our only shot at a signature win. There are way too many teams above us that even with one loss they will get in. Twelve point lead at home with 8 minutes left. We blew it.

It’s a little early to start the”we have to win out because every team above will not lose another game” mantra. We usually don’t see that until week eight. A one-point loss to the 3rd rank team is too big a blemish.

Agreed if we run the table and osu loses twice we can win the big ten and a 1 loss big ten winner with a flukey 1 point loss to osu and wins over Michigan, Michigan State, Iowa, Wisconsion (possibly 2x if we meet the in the big ten title game)we should get in but none of this is guaranteed and who knows about Notre Dame and other teams.

In what year would a 1-loss team to another (at the time) top 5 team NOT have made the CFP? Genuinely don’t know the answer but can’t thibk of any off the top of my head. The CFP committee has made clear in the last two years that they care more about quality of loss than quality of wins or conference championships.

Gonna preface it by saying I don’t think we have much hope to make the playoff even if we win out. That said, One loss Clemson would likely be behind us given that the acc is a dumpster fire. Texas beating Oklahoma and winning the big 12 would help as well given their loss to Maryland, if ou drops one and its the big 12 champ game they might slide behind us given the committee has never taken a ccg loser. Georgia losing in the sec champ game might put them behind us, see above about ccg losers, especially if bama throttles them (not impossible). Probably want bama to win out, and blowout, everyone they play since they’re in unless they drop two. If OSU drops the ccg to Wisconsin as their only loss and we beat the badgers, and everyone else convincingly we could theoretically jump them, see above re:ccg losers.

Lots of stuff needs to happen. Odds are it won’t all fall into place

You're right about it's hard to go undefeated in CF. But OSU with two losses in their remaining games ??? You'd get better odds of the Germans bombing Pearl Harbor again

Just need one to open the door depending how other, ailbeit unlikely, situations play out.

All that needs to fall in place is 11-1 for PSU. They will absolutely make the playoffs with only a one-point loss to OSU.

Agree to disagree. They can make it in at 11-1 but a lot of things out of Penn state’s control need to happen. They’re far from a lock. The three way tie in the big ten East is their best bet. Needing all of the breaks in other conferences less likely.
