However I think we have the right guy now based on current commitments. I understand why Levis wanted to transfer and given the new rules how do you convince him to stay. He wanted to start and got his wish. We missed on some guys, but recruiting a kid is a process that develops over several years. Any coaching changes will have some ripple effect. However it was the right move to change coordinators last year and the benefits far outweigh the negatives.

we do have 2 of the top QB prospects as commits for 2022 so there is that.

Actually Pribula is rated considerably lower in the composite than Roberson was. Allar yes

Roberson was ranked quite high. It is not recruiting that has been the issue. It is qb development that has been lacking.
I think Yurcick is exactly the right man for the job of both recruiting and developing. What he did for Clifford and watching his teaching interaction on the sidelines yesterday with Roberson speaks volumes to me.
Yurcick is the guy.

Agree, but IMHO the existence of the portal is what caused that L yesterday. If Will Levis is still the backup PSU wins going away.

Some guys just don't work out, it has nothing to do with coaching or anything. Some guys just don't have it.

Recruit rankings can get slanted based on the high school game.

Roberson is simply now in the wrong system. He was recruited at a time when Franklin was still hell-bent on the QB becoming an extra running back. He could be a great QB for a team like Air Force or Navy, but unlikely to go far in a Yurcich system even if he settles down. Just not a QB that can make all of the throws. I don't see touch and he wasn't even close to hitting a downfield receiver.

I am thrilled to have Yurcich. Finally, a guy that runs a system that will attract QBs with a legitimate eye on the NFL.

And Yurcich looks like he does some game-day coaching too. He's not sitting in the press box, and he's not just staring down at a play-sheet.

Not only losing Levis, but Micah Bowans , and Johnson hurt the back up situation. Sets up a bad scenario, should of plugged in at least one portal qb in there,

Not to change the subject but Iowa is a team loaded with 3 star talent that out physically put 5 PSU players out of action. Our QB room is down to TR , CV and walk ons, not a good situation.

BTW Iowa knocked 5 qb's out of the game in 6 of it's games.

Honestly was a shame we couldn’t get a QB thru the transfer portal. We all knew if Clifford went down it was big trouble. One thing for sure unless Clifford returns we don’t have a starting QB on our roster for 2022. We’re going to need a 2 year starter before Allar is ready.

For all of those people that are mad we didnt get a portal qb….seems to me not many qbs transferred to a place where they weren’t garunteed a starting spot. This game was lost for two reasons:

1. We whiffed on Bowens and Michael Johnson Jr.
2. When Roberson did get his chance yesterday the coaches only made adjustments on one drive and we got a fg out of it. The coaches can’t be blamed for clifford getting hurt. But they can be blamed for the lack of awareness with what they have in Roberson.

I don't know, if the situation is extreme enough, it would not be unprecedented to see a true freshman at QB sometime during the year if they can enroll early.

It surely is a great opportunity regardless -- Yurcich for a coach, early playing time, PSU venue, tradition, etc. It's all there, except recent national championships.

And Iowa adjusted back to this. This was a good defense out there. They pressed SC into the first turnover. It only led to 3, but that's exactly what we lost by.

Merely a punt there and a stop changes so many variables.

Clearly make it a priority.

Best thing to happen is Cliff coming back for a 6th year, backed up by Allar and hand the team to Allar for the 23 season.

If we are lucky, Yurcich could be the next Ryan Day.

that would be good but Clifford may just want to move on.
In most cases I agree except in this one.
His brother will be there.
His family seems 100% PSU.
Right now he is probably a practice player at best in the NFL, so why not stay and learn from MY another year.
He could probably add a masters degree to his two bachelors
I don’t think family is hurting for money.
Could be a perfect storm to get the qb room back on track.

If he thought he had a big NFL career ahead of him, he would have been gone already IMO.

He might just want to move on with life.

I remember when Dan Earl was able to play basketball for six years due to injuries. It was pointless
Football is different though. Once you take the pads off, that is it. There is no YMCA league for tackle football.

I would give it a 70-30 he comes back.

my guess if he winds up losing the season to injury, he would want to come back. IMHO that would be preferable to getting a new player to transfer in. However, whether Allar or Pribula, not seeing why they cannot play. Caleb Williams, a pure FR, pulled game out for OU yesterday as he replaced the 5* starter. FR QBs can play, and sometimes better than the current players on the roster.

whether SC or a transfer, the role would be to get things started but you will likely be replaced by either Drew, Beau or even one of the current players on the roster. Not holding my breath on TR, but CV may be capable.

The drive at the end was so stupid. And also the one before that. They had Roberson throwing these long bombs when they could have tried designed runs and have him try to get out of bounds. That would have at least produced a first down.

Probably had more to do with the restricted playbook TRob was capable of executing. Chucking it down field is easy. Methodically working your way up the field with limited time is not.

I don't think Allar or Pribula are going to be too upset if they don't get a shot to play next year, as RS FR that is a different story. lot's to learn in MY system in addition to reading CFB defenses.

A pattern emerges!

Seinfeld ala the car rental episode: “Penn St knows how to recruit QBs, they just don’t know how to keep QBs!”

So taking a guy who everyone else only wanted as a safety and making him an NFL level QB is not development? How about Clifford? No one thought he could even win this year and he’s lighting it up….I would call that QB development. Our backup goes to Kentucky and they’re a top 15 team with a 6-1 record. Where is this lack of QB development? Because one player came into a game he couldn’t handle and that shows a lack of QB development?
