I think we're about due for one -- feels like it's been at least a week. Right, WT?
I was recently making space on my DVR by transferring my 2017 Nationals recordings to DVD (an annual tradition as the new season gets underway), and I came across a little gem where Baldwin was interviewing the 2 Gables (Steveson for his verbal to Minnie, and Dan for - well - his thoughts on Penn State. I found the latter exchange pretty amusing after recalling Nolf's post-finals interview later in the tournament . . .
Baldwin interview w/ Dan Gable
Baldwin: Question for you, Coach. You won 21 Big Ten titles, 15 national titles. Cael Sanderson has something special going on right there -- going on right now. He's going to win -- it looks like he's headed toward 6 out of 7. Do you see any similarities, differences -- what's he got going on there that's allowed him to create what's really, truly an empire, a real legacy there at Penn State?
Gable: Well, it looks like his kids are out there competing, they're getting better during the season, and they're really hitting it with some stuff that, uhh, you know, it's not normally basic wrestling. It's maybe basic for some people, but you don't know where they're going to come from. So, I think that that's the big thing, that they're having fun out there, like He says -- I'm not sure if wrestling's fun or not, but, it's obviously fun when you get your hand raised, and they're getting their hands raised a lot.
Baldwin: Beautiful. All right, guys, thanks so much. Thanks for being with us . . .
Kessenich interview w/Nolf
Kessenich: . . . And that's Coach Sanderson's motto, basically, for you guys. Be aggressive, and have fun. Where was the fun tonight? Where did we see the fun?
Nolf: I had a lot of fun having -- holding my hands up.
Kessenich (chuckling): Yes you did. Congratulations, Jason.
Now, I doubt Nolf said that intentionally as a poke at Gable -- he actually stopped himself from saying "having my hand raised" -- but it would have been hilarious if he had.
Overall, the Baldwin interview was just peculiar. First, the insensitivity in asking Gable (of all people) that question about Cael and PSU. Followed up by his "Beautiful" response after Gable was finished commenting on something that was obviously painful to acknowledge.
And then you have Gable's general discontent with the state of affairs. PSU guys improve during the season (read: peak at Nationals). PSU is creative/multidimensional in its wrestling style (read: they do more than just "move forward").
Once the "PSU must be cheating" and "other programs are saying not-so-nice things about us" excuses run their course on the boards, maybe we can have some f*n with a "PSU guys know cool moves" excuse.
All in f*n, people . . .
