Time to lay off Kirk

I've never been as critical of him as some on this board. Yes, the eye test stuff was bad, but he's always been complimentary of the PSU program.

Then today on Twitter, he had some complimentary things to say about Joe, for which he (predictably) is taking a lot of heat. Maybe someone who knows how to do these things can post the tweet, which was a reply to a Chafie Fields comment about Joe. It's clear he knows Joe got railroaded. Now I just hope he has the balls to say it in front of a big audience. Saturday's GameDay, perhaps?

Thanks for telling us what we should think/do...please advise when we can likewise lay off Mushmouf...I'm sure he's ready to bury the hatchet too.

Meh. There will be plenty of opportunity to go after Kirk, and for him to show how much he deserves it. Just wait another week. It's gonna be on like Donkey Kong.

I, for one, have recognized how complimentary Kirk Herbstreit has always been of our program and I am very appreciative. He has been more positive about us than any non-affiliated sports personality--and even including some of our own.

Some of you are misplacing your anger.

Looking at the replies on twitter is downright scary. Everyone thinks they are an expert at everything. They ignore facts that people post, but won't produce any of their own. They think their opinion is fact.

I think there can be far worse people in his place. He is fairly knowledgeable, or at least appears to make the effort.
I get frustrated with the fools that are in the booth, even at the NFL level.
I also don't think it's even close between Ohio State and Michigan alumni, OSU's may be overly optimistic, but UofM's are typically delusional...accurately represented by Herbie and Mushmouth.
If these people were always right, there'd be no reason to play the games.

Is it not hypocritical as hell that some of the same people that blast Kirk are the same people saying Trace sucks, the Oline Sucks, JoMo sucks, etc....just take a look at any game thread on any given sat.

Shouldn't you be sending that Title message to the HR department at SECSPN???? And Mushmouf should be shown the door as well!!!

When I first read the title, I wasn't sure if this was a thread asking for his firing, or asking for people to stop doing something.

Another example of how the written word an be misinterpreted easily. I hope GMJ11 is paying attention.

Herbie is far from perfect but he is about as educated and even handed as the game has right now. Of course he'll pander to an audience - he's essentially in the entertainment business.....but the challenge of being an analyst of a sport with over 100 teams playing every weekend is your views are quite often compressed into soundbites and it's nearly impossible to cover all the bases.

It's simply impossible to pay compliment to one team wihtout another feeling like they're slighted or being held to a double standard. Fans just need to accept the limitations.

My only issue with Herbie is his arrogance. He often says that people who don't study all these teams like he and his co workers do really shouldn't have an opinion. He was on one of the ESPN radio shows and they were asking him about a fan base that wanted a coach fired and he stated that fans don't study the game like he does so they're wrong. That was the same weekend he got beat on his predictions by a country music singer who was the guest picker on Gameday.

I'm not going to hold it against an analyst if they're bad any given week at predicting games. Even the best picker out there may only be right 65-70% of the time...and that's being generous.

Bigger point I think he makes regarding the fans (especially as it relates to coaches) is that fans are emotional - and quite often heavily emotional - when it comes to their team, so the big picture escapes them. If you want a good read on coaching, someone that is detached from the fandom is probably going to give you a more reliable opinion.

You're dead on. Every fan base feels butt hurt from time to time except for maybe Bama who never really has anyone second guess them. There is no way he could keep every fan base happy, but he sure as sh!t doesn't pile on PSU.

I think that affects Kirk regarding HIS team. I have heard it in his voice as OSU is getting beat.

True, but one doesn't have to study hours of game film to realize a coach like Butch Jones should be gone.

Yes, really. Last September on Gameday. Google is your friend.

You really shouldn't be posting about subjects you know nothing about.
THnaks for the information. I never knew that Herbie announced on live TV that Joe was wrongly vilified.

Yes and no.....

There are any number of factors that can contribute to a team underachieving. I'm not one that thinks a guy who got to that point of his career and in that job simply forgot how to coach, and it's important to remind people of that from time to time. Quite frequently losing begets losing...while pulling out a close win can be a tipping point the other way.
.

I wouldn't expect him to be a robot. Blackledge can have the same reaction to PSU.
Get back to me when OSU beats PSU, finishes first in the division and wins the conf championship game, and Blackledge is everywhere citing a baseless "eye test" as proof PSU should go to the playoff. Oh, and PSU GETS IN AND GETS BLOWN OUT 31-0!

That is a false equivalence, I think.

You realize that didn't put OSU in the playoffs....the 2 losses is what held PSU back. I mean it sounds like a great gripe, but they were a 1 loss team. Which other 2 loss team got in last year? He wasn't on the committee...this idea that he was the big reason for PSU not getting in is so far overblown. Yes, PSU was playing better down the stretch, but the committee saw a blowout loss and a loss to a 7-5 team. OSU lost one game at night to the eventual BT champs. I'm not a fan of just 4 teams, but this woe is me Herbie hates PSU act is old. He basically paid PSU the biggest compliment you could about how the players at PSU are behaved and wants his kids to grow up like them...but yeah...he has it out for PSU.
