He's an Altoona boy, which I love being that I'm from Johnstown, and he bleeds blue and white! Just listen to a few of his pregame speeches via the Penn State football story videos on YouTube and you can see the passion and pride he has for the university! We need to hire a guy with allegiance to the university who wants to be 'a part of the process,' not a big name guy who will pick up and leave in 2 years.

I think he was already co-DC, so it's really not a promotion, just a decision not to bring in another "co".

My guess is it's Pry ... or else LaVar Arrington, Mike Zordich or Jim Haslett.

Arrington would be the blow-the-socks-off-the-sports-pages hire. He bleeds Blue and White, he loved JoePa, and he would recruit like crazy. Penn State would start getting 5-star defensive recruits with LaVar as the DC. And he might even become the odds-on favorite to succeed Franklin at some point.

Zordich also bleeds Blue and White, and would be a good takeaway from Harbaugh, but not as sexy as LaVar.

Pry makes the most sense from a recruiting standpoint THIS YEAR, but somebody would have to come in and take over the LB position coach role ... that might be too low of a role for LaVar.

Um, while I love LaVar, he hasn't coached a day in his life. What would make him qualified to be the defensive coordinator for a Power 5 college football team?

This could be a reason why there there might not be an announcement about an elevation to DC, i.e. he's already there. The first official announcement might turn out to be when Shoop's slot on the staff is back filled.

If and when Pry is named DC, there will be an announcement.

I like the idea of promoting Pry and then hiring West or Zordich or another assistant coach. Perhaps someone who could help with special teams.

It's a done deal with Pry as DC:

http://www.gopsusports.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/011016aab.html

with some other smaller changes:

"UNIVERSITY PARK, PA. - Brent Pry has been elevated to associate head coach and defensive coordinator, Penn State head football coach James Franklin announced today. Pry has spent the last five seasons on Franklin's staff as co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Vanderbilt and Penn State. He held the title of assistant head coach for the last three seasons.

Additionally, Franklin announced that Terry M. Smith has been promoted to assistant head coach while retaining the title of defensive recruiting coordinator and cornerbacks coach. Defensive line coach Sean Spencer will serve as run game coordinator..."

Congratulations to Brent Pry and Terry Smith! Well deserved promotions to people who WANT to be part of Penn State's success!
