TOM Iowa preview

Not buying Brooks moving up in 184. He got a high seed based on his performance (at home) in the Big tourney, where I thought he wrestled well over his head. At Nationals, I thought he finished at a more expected level. This year 184 is going to be a lot tougher than last. Overall, once you get past Gilman, Clark and Sorenson, Iowa has as many, or more, question marks than Penn State.

I am perplexed by the writer's reference to Brooks moving up to 197 to test the waters. Maybe some of the Iowa visitors/posters here can shed more light...does it have some basis in fact, or is the writer just making it up?

3 things to consider, for the wrestler and coach...
1) The descent rules. 184 to 197, if the wrestler approaches 197 before descending, is a 4-5 week process, staying within the NCAA rules.
2) February 15. That's the date EVERY wrestler must be down to the weight they'll wrestle at their conference tournament.
3) Descending that late in the season doesn't give time to settle into the lower weight, and it likely would cause stamina problems.

It has been discussed, but I'm not sure how likely it is. As you mention, the downside, if the experiment doesn't work, is substantial, but I do wonder how many tournament points Iowa would lose. They will do something to cover for Stoll until he comes back and while that probably means moving Wilcke to 197 and bumping Holloway to HWT. However, Brooks could try his hand against Nate Rotert on December 2nd to see where he is. If it goes well, maybe he takes a shot at the Midlands.

184 is so tough that he could move up or he could miss the podium. 197 is much thinner at the top. This isn't pure speculation, but I'm not sure how much of a chance there is that we actually see it happen either.

Brooks will wrestle 184 at B1Gs and NCAAs. He simply isn't a 197.

there are a couple of lines in there that are malonesque
