Ryan is a good guy and his teams are always good representatives for the school. He might be a little off on where his program stands versus Penn State, but he’s just putting his kids #1. I don’t recall him ever being anything but professional while matches are going on.

And he’s stronger than me for picking up the pieces after his son passed. Tough read.

Tom is a very good man; intense, but always well-intentioned.

I was a student at Hofstra when this happened and remember too vividly the shock that permeated the campus (wrestling fans and not).

About a year later, I had a chance to talk to Tom about it; very good chat about the importance of faith.

I met Tom at a tournament when he was in college and I was coaching. He was a very impressive person even back then. You don't get a team to win NCAA titles and be competitive at that level without having some special inner talents and strengths. His faith is strong and I think it serves as a guide for everything he does. I have been a fan of his since I first met him. That does not mean that I do not laugh at some of the jokes you guys make, Some of you guys are down right funny.

Never new this about the Ryan family. It takes courage to air those thoughts and feelings publicly and I can say that this story will help others who are trying to cope with similar situations. Hats off to Tom and his family for sharing.
