Tomlin was asked about a rumor that he could be in the mix for the Trojans job on Tuesday during his press conference. The question gave us one of the most emphatic denials of a coaching rumor that you'll ever see.
"Hey guys, I don't have time for that speculation," he said. "That's a joke to me. I've got one of the best jobs in all of professional sport. Why would I have any interest in coaching college football? That will be the last time that I address it. And not only today, but moving forward. Never say never ... but never. Anybody got any more questions about college jobs ... there's not a booster with a big enough blank check."
The it was a mic drop I believe.
Instead we get:
"Umm yeah, we handle all that stuff internally and with our Leadership Council. We are just focused on the week at hand and Illinois. It starts with I love you and ends with I love you."
HEY JAMES....might want to get right who you are playing, especially this week!!
I know I read on here there is no way Franklin could possibly find time to address the rumors. Glad to see Tomlin did. Hopefully he can figure out to make up that 10 seconds that he lost making that statement.
Well that could explain last week. He sent the real team to Columbus.
In reality, this week actually in Columbus they are going to get the shit kicked out of them. Coach doesn't even get the opponent right, twice. And it's his main rival. No focus at all.
Notice how he mentioned Sean Payton and Andy Reid, two guys with only one ring. He knows where he stands.
USC would be an insult to an NFL record breaking coach with one of the best winning %'s of all time and no losing seasons in 15 years. He isn't even 50 and he goes to even Belichick's age he will be the winningest coach of all time.
He owned that mic. I am more worried about losing him to the mic than anythibg else. He doesn't seem like a burnout guy though.
I really think Rodgers last 2-3 years could be in Pittsburgh. That would be sick especially with a young improving Oline.

Wait a second...I thought many of you didn't even want him; so what's the big deal about whether or not he re-affirms commitment to PSU?
If you get what you want, he'll look foolish saying he'll definitely be at PSU for the full duration of his contract only to soon get released? LOL, that scenario is unlikely to happen, but even so he isn't as unintelligent as many wish him to be to fall into such a word trap. If he is going to re-affirm, he will do so (or has already done so) to the people who he knows want him here, particularly the players, recruits and their families.
It is amazing that the same people who post that CJF should have already been let go then without delay attack him for not saying definitively that he will stay. Why not rejoice?; that's the desired goal, right? With respect, make up your minds and at least be consistent.
Great answer by one of the most overrated coaches in NFL History. Tomlin is a horrible HC and Steeler fan will rejoice when that shyster is gone.
Guys roster has been top notch yearly with HOF and possible HOF like Ben, Ward, Polamalu, Harrison, Brown and wins one super bowl and is 8-8 in the playoffs. Good thing for him, the Browns and Bengals were bad early in his career as coach or his numbers would be bad.
Bill Cowher was 8-9 going in the playoffs his second to last season before finishing it off at 8-8 his final year. Think it was 3 road games before he got his big ring and finished 12-9

Apologies if you weren't among them...but right now there are about 6 threads full of such sentiment, so the point was fresh in my mind: why be concerned about him not definitively saying that he is remaining at PSU if he is not wanted anyway?...
Again, it was in response to the content of your post, but apologies if it seemed to target you specifically, especially if you are not among the group that I described, which I will take your word for it that you are not.
For the record I love Franklin and think he has faults but also think he is the best man for this job. That is why it pains me that he just won't come out and say he isn't going anywhere and he is loyal to Penn State and is staying. Year by year he pulls this stuff and it actually now has a numbing effect on me where quite frankly, I am not sure if I care if he leaves anymore.
He also has no business sniffing the HOF. But everyone gets in now. Hell Trent Dilfer won a Super Bowl put him in.

I’ll start by saying I think Tomlinson is a good coach. But he took over a winning team with an established QB so the record is a little padded. In the NFL good QBs 75 percent of the battle When it comes to winning.
I’ve been tough on Tomlin as I believe he is a perennial underachiever but two things keep me from wishing for him to be fired:
First, how in the world did he keep Bell and Brown in check for a couple of years? Those guys are basket cases and we didn’t find out until just before or after they left the team.
Second, only one coach has a better record in the NFL since Tomlin was hired. One. Thirty other teams would love to have his record. And while winning games doesn’t necessarily win championships, you’ve got to win a lot of games to have a shot at it. The Steelers could be like the Chargers who fired Marty Schottenheimer because he went 14-2 and lost in the playoffs - they’ve been basically irrelevant since.
Lets not forget, the Steelers have always had some great locker room guys, I am sure they kept Bell and Brown in check more then Tomlin, and really was Bell such a huge problem?
Tomlin can't even keep JuJu from his dumb tiktok, so I won't put much stalk he was the sole reason Bell and Brown were held in check.
Also, remember Blount walking off the field in middle of the game? Tomlin has not handled those kind of issues well at all.

He simply acted on instinct, then caught himself - the genuine look on his face was priceless.

There’s really only 4 ways to answer the question of whether you are interested in another position.
1. Always tell the truth. Shoot down all rumors when you have no interest in leaving, but when there is an interest in possibly moving say so. No coach has ever taken this approach (and for good reason).
2. Shoot down rumors when there is no interest, but when there is an interest in possibly moving lie about it and shoot it down anyway. The Tomlin approach. It’s great, until the one time it’s a lie. And then you’re smeared for having no credibility and lying to your team.
3. Shoot down the rumors when there is no interest, but then be vague when there is possibly an interest. Which simply doesn’t work - because it’s clear you’re interested based on changing your usual approach.
4. Just be vague all the time, but say something positive about your commitment. The Franklin approach. The fans hate the ambiguity, but you preserve your credibility, and hopefully at some point - people will just realize it’s useless ever asking the question (since the answer always lacks substance).
Bottom line - totally justifiable to hate Franklin’s answer, but probably the least worse of the 4 options.

He looked lost at the PC today…not good…sadly this looks like a bad ending and animosity with a fan base that has generally been supportive and patient.
With Tomlin, I thought his response was good to a certain point. But, continuing it on as long as he did and then standing up and walking off. That didn’t impress me.
