Its good to see him back. But what the heck is the staff thinking. I know they want to get him in the game etc... But bringing him in, a play designed for him, isn't fooling anybody. The opposing team thinking, "Stevens is in, he rarely comes in unless it is a play designed for him." A true waste of possessions, chances, and valuable time. If you want to get him in let him throw a few passes. C'mon staff. Going forward use this psychology to your benefit in play calling. Call me Coach Benedict.

Everyone at the game, and millions of people watching, knew when Tommy came in the game that he was going to get a flat pass to the right side. The Buckeyes were waiting in the wings to throw him for a loss.

It’s fun enough watching the backup quarterback carry the ball and run over a linebacker for a two yard gain, but the simple fact that’s become clear is that when Tommy Stevens is on the field, it comes at the expense of having a superior option that can stress the defense much more than Stevens is capable of doing.

I don't have a problem with the Lion Position, if it is a "position." That isn't the case when you rarely use it, but send the ball to the Lion whenever he's in there. Fools no one. And I certainly don't like long laterals (passes) behind the LOS against a fast team like OSU -- to a kid who isn't a receiver and hasn't played. Would have been a terrific decoy to free up the tight end or running back though. I thought a fake jet sweep would work as well. Have yet to see it.

I thought this was going to be about passes getting batted down, carry on

I’d much rather use him in the slot. Not where every play is designed for him but rather as a large bodied option that can create a mismatch.

The coaches feel Stevens is extremely talented, enough to warrant a new position. With that said, the "wrinkle" with Stevens in the game was no different than when he played against Washington, with similar results. Just like that last 4th down play, predictably will not work against your better opponents.

The first 2 "Lion" plays were for the purpose of setting up the third - the double pass. The Buckeyes bit on that play and it would have gone for a long gain (probably a touchdown) if Tommy hadn't dropped the ball. I think he was looking downfield at the wide open receiver and there was a temporary lapse of concentration. I hope we see more of Tommy in the Lion position.

Everyone’s favorite player is the backup. Won’t surprise me if Clifford wins the job next year tbh.

Stevens doesn't really have any meaningful time out there running the offense. All this Lion nonsense seems to be doing is making the gap between him and Clifford that much greater (or smaller). Also wouldn't be surprised to see Clifford win the job for next year - no guarantees for Tommy.

Wrong time to kill beautiful drives at the outset of the game in order to set the Bucks up on a double pass play later on. What in the world was Stevens doing running an end around hand off when we have a guy like KJ in the game. I know they were trying a trick play but, again, the Buckeyes didn't bite.

It's very tough for an inexperienced receiving option to reach back to catch a ball on his hip while moving away from the play, especially when he knows he has to then set up to pass. McSorley obviously needs to make a better pass there.

That said, bringing in a "gimmick" guy when he touches the ball every time he's in the game is not a smart move, obviously. Even if you're trying to set up a play later on, it's basically throwing away a couple plays, and with high risk involved (laterals, etc.).

Amen, brother. Also, it would be nice to give Stevens some meaningful snaps at QB...thus far, his passing is pretty much untested in games. Which is a little scary if he's the de facto starter next year.

As long as he’s healthy, I don’t want any meaningful snap in 2018 taken by a quarterback not named Trace McSorley. I don’t even think Stevens as the de facto starter is anything close to a given.

Stevens is the favorite, but will have competition to start next year. Clifford has a nice skill set and will compete for the job.

This is a brutal crowd. How many people were anxiously awaiting his return for the mismatch he creates? Last night was a tough team to get your first action against and for that the coaches need accountability. I’m sure the game was moving just a tad too fast for Stevens.

Having said all that, I do think that people feel 2020 is set up to be a good year. The only issue is that the Nits might be debuting a new QB that year. I do believe that for everyone involved, it probably would have benefitted everyone for Stevens to have transferred, both PSU and Tommy.

The gadget stuff works because it’s a gadget. You can go all the way back to when MRob was used the first time. If this stuff wasn’t a surprise, the Eagles would be running the Philly Special every play. Once it’s on tape, the formation and personnel don’t lie. So, unless you have a ton of plays in the package for Stevens, well it is what it is.
