Had the pleasure of watching Sundays matches at the Hershey park arena. Brought back some great memories, but to be honest I am spoiled by the treatment at the Giant center and am glad states are there.

As for the post I linked the brackets to the Junior High State tournament this past weekend. While not a true indicator of what is in the pipeline, it does offer a glimpse.

After last years tournament I raved about sammy Sasso and teasdale...well you know where they are now.

This year the kid at 140lbs was tough and the announcer said he was a 4x PJW champ, which is a great accomplishment.

the kid at 87lbs impressed me as did the kid at 124, 132 & 167 that won it. there were a couple others that I circled in my program, but I didnt bring that to the office.

I was told by a friend that if he had to wager a guess 3000-4000 fans were there on Saturday. Sunday with a lot of the kids out of the tourney there was probably 800-1000 I would say.

Was told that the PJW folks were charged $50k to rent the arena for the weekend. That number boggles my mind, but it was nice to have the tournament in the middle of the state again.

Wasn't there, but some other names I think you will be hearing from next year:

Duboe - the Heavy from Erie - serious force next year. Would be at Hershey this weekend if he was in HS. Think along the lines of Haines and Wood in terms of big guys.

Hillegas - 97

117 had some really good kids with Chlebove, Fuss, Traver, Perkins

102 was strong too, led by Tamburrino and Coy

The 140 you mentioned is Carter Starocci, who I believe has a brother wrestling in college currently.

good stuff, dunk ...

I knew the tourney was taking place, but forgot to look up the results.

After looking at the link you provided, I'll throw another thing out there that kind of surprised me. How about a kid from Philadelphia winning 212 lbs.? As great a wrestling state as PA is, if this sport is to grow in PA, then the Philadelphia kids are going to have to be a big part of that. I think there was also a 3rd place winner from Philadelphia at 82 lbs.

Another surprise to me was a kid from Lower Merion placing 5th at 92 lbs. Lower Merion School District has 2 high schools - Lower Merion and Harriton. If you combined the varsities of both teams, you'd still have to forfeit a few weights in a competition against another high school. They have a decent (not huge) youth program within the school district, so it's not as though there is nobody in that region wrestling.

Jameel Coles is the 212 from Phila and he has been winning PJW titles since he was in diapers. He is a Phila PAL, now BTS-Philly kid. We use to throw him in with the 7th graders at the Indian Open when he was in 4th grade. Kid is going to be very good, is the younger brother of Hakim Coles who wrestled at Northeast and is now at the Hill School. I would suspect Jameel will join Hakim there - along with another Philly PAL kid there now, Dymir Davis-Carruth, if/when they can get him in.

There have been a lot of Philly kids who have made an impact at the state level, but they usually do so at the private schools.

The Lower Merion kid you referenced is Connor Tracy, who will probably end up at a private also. I think he works out with Nate - he may be better able to fill you in on him.

Re: good stuff, dunk ...

Love posts like this as I have alot of inside knowledge on these kids. Here are the place winners that I've coached for years by weight:

77lbs: Chris Kim (4th) - Already at Germantown Academy (7th grader)
82lbs: Nate Lackman (1st) - From Reading. Either Wilson HS or Malvern Prep
82lbs: Liam Logue (3rd) - From just outside Philly and one of three brothers. Still narrowing it down with Malvern Prep on the list
87lbs: Henry Hague (6th) - Already at Malvern Prep (8th grader)
92lbs: Connor Tracy (5th) - Lower Merion. Still narrowing it down between a bunch of private schools, including Malvern Prep.
97lbs: Dalton Harkins (8th) - Already at Malvern Prep (7th grader)
107lbs: Luke Nichter (1st) - Was on my traveling team this year and will go to Chambersburg. Watch out for this kid!!!
117lbs: Daniel Mancini (2nd) - Home schooled and still narrowing it down with Malvern Prep on the list
117lbs: Gunner Fuss (4th) - From Bristol, but expect a private school here.
132lbs: Collin Hurley (4th): From West Chester and still narrowing it down. MP on his list.
167lbs: Nicholas Florschutz (3rd): From Coastesville with MP high on his list.

Connor Kievman and Sammy Hillegas are the two most known names, but Coles and DeBoe have also won multiple PJW championships as well.
