2. Miami (FL): 98-20-0 (.831)
3. BYU: 102-26-0 (.797)
4. Oklahoma: 91-25-2 (.780)
5. Clemson: 86-25-4 (.765)
6. Penn State: 89-27-2 (.763)
7. Georgia: 88-27-4 (.756)

National Champions in the 1980s

1980: Georgia
1981: Clemson
1982: Penn State
1983: Miami (Florida)
1984: Brigham Young
1985: Oklahoma
1986: Penn State
1987: Miami (Florida)
1988: Notre Dame
1989: Miami (Florida)

...

Despite all of their victories however, Nebraska did not win a single national championship during the decade. Thus, with their three national championships, Miami is considered to be the team of the decade.

Miami was the only program that won three national championships during the 1980s. Pennsylvania State University was the only other team that won multiple titles, winning two.

Georgia, Clemson, Brigham Young, Oklahoma, and Notre Dame all won one national title in the 1980s.

He's focused solely on W-L record which would be ok except for the glaring fact that all schedules aren't equal. In the 80s the Big 8 was a complete joke. There was only 1 game that mattered- Nebraska vs Oklahoma. The rest of the conference wasn't even in the discussion any year.

That said, however you rank teams, I'm not sure how Penn State doesn't make the top 10. Miami had 3 MNCs in the 80s. Penn State had 2 (played for 3). Nebraska had 0.

I'd think most knowledgable people would have Miami as the team of the 80s and Penn State certainly in the top 10 for that decade.

EDIT- Look where he has FSU. "Bad" FSU records in the 1980s- 6-5 (1981), 8-4 (1983), 7-3-2 (1984), 7-4-1 (1986). 0 national championships.

There's simply no way you can objectively say that a team that won 2 MNCS and played for another and had the 6th most wins isn't one of the top 10 teams of the 1980s. Given the author's doubling down, he's clearly agenda driven.

OK. Who is Bill Connelly?? Not that his ratings mean much but Auburn started the decade with two losing seasons and played for zero MNCs.. That's all good in SEC land I guess.

I offer the guy some sound, solid advice and he jumps down all our throats.
The media types don't generally accept advice well. Most think they're smarter than everyone so accepting advice would mean admitting someone else knows something they don't.

Who is he? , he has to "raise money" to write a book ???? How does that happen? From what I gather it's a form of begging ??? So someone else will pay your bills while you write a "comic" book :)

I want to watch every football game this year, can I get some money to do that?

Plus, in '80 and '81 we were Top 3 to 5 in year end rankings, I think. '84 and '88 were the only poor seasons record-wise for that decade.

That would be like saying the LA Dodgers were not a top 10 baseball team in the 80's or the Redskins weren't a top 10 pro football team in the 80's. Two championships in a decade put you in the top two or three, not just the top 10.

IMO, Miami was the team of the 80s. They won 3 and were in contention to win 5.

Two important things to keep in mind:

1. It's Bill Connelly. If you don't know who he is, join the enormous crowd, then read #2.

2. It's SBNation. How they came to be considered sports gurus is way beyond me.

Final AP rankings for Penn State, 1980-89:

1980 8
1981 3
1982 1
1983 NR
1984 NR
1985 3
1986 1
1987 NR
1988 NR
1989 15

Maybe not the top team of the decade, but finished in the top three in 4/10 years and finished #1 twice. That's why people should never do rankings subjectively. They are stupid. Almost any objective ranking methodology would weight national championships pretty heavily, and a team with two of them in a decade would be among the decades best teams.
