Hard to argue with the list. I would add Mike Hartenstein to the list. Seems to me he was ABC defensive player of the year before there was ESPN.... Also, if Zettle puts together another stellar year, he may warrant mention on the list. I"m sure I'm missing a few others as well, like the top DT on the 1986 NC team.

Yeah, Bob White and Tim Johnson. Good but not quite at the level of the others. Always nice to be reminded of that great team.

Mike Reid deservedly at the top of the list. Unanimous All-American pick. Outland & Maxwell Awards winner. Top 5 in Heisman voting. College Football Hall of Fame. NFL All Pro. And...a Grammy Award Winner!

no dis respect to anyone on that list, but it appears they just wanted to put some 'modern' guys on the list. As mentioned Hartenstein was a beast, as was Leo Wisniewski (sp?). Let alone guys like Bob White, Randy Crowder, and Randy Sidler.

I'm glad that you mentioned Leo Wisniewski. He was a beast. He played 3 seasons in the NFL with the Colts on bad wheels. In his final season with the Colts he had 7 sacks in 14 games playing NT. That is a mighty impressive number for a NT. I've met Leo several times through a mutual friend who went to Fox Chapel High School with Leo. He told me that Dwight Stephenson was hands down the greatest player he ever faced.

Met Leo at a lineman camp at Geneva College a few years back when my youngest son was playing HS football. As far as I know he is still a coach there. But I wouldn't consider him for top 5 DT's at PSU. His son Stephan and Ship were there too. As well as Tunch and Kolb. I played some BB with Clark at rec hall Sunday nights. Phenomenal athlete and great guy as well. If he had stayed healthy he'd be in the NFL HoF

I agree that he would not be a top 5 guy, but he was an excellent player at PSU and a 2nd round NFL draft pick. He was also an undefeated PIAA Heavyweight Wrestling champion his senior year of high school at Fox Chapel. Just liked that he was mentioned. Bruce Clark was my favorite PSU player and a definite top 5. It was sad when he injured his knee and missed the end of the 1979 season. Can't argue with Mike Reid as number 1 though. He was truly dominant in his era.

Bob White was mentioned here and I thought he was a DE, not DT. At any rate he was far from top 5 all-time. He was a heck of a HS FB. Saw him play many times.

What about Tamba Hali...I know he is kind of a hybrid DE/LB type in the pros but he was clearly a DE at penn state!!!

I was a teenager when Mike Reid was a senior at Altoona HS. He had announced that he was going to PSU so my dad took me and my cousins to Mansion Park to watch him play his last high school game. I have no idea who they played, but I remember Mike Reid. He dominated the game from start to finish. He could not be blocked and was in the backfield on each and every play. You absolutely could not take your eyes off of him.

The only other high school player that impressed me similar to that was Lavar Arrington.

Mike Reid was the most impressive athlete I've ever seen live. And I've watched dozens of NFL games live. Seriously...he was THAT good.
