-feeling good about Nico. Just didn't finish. Did think NaTo could have been hit for stalling... when you don't shoot your're suspect. Nico was stalking the entire time..-
- JC was impressive. Knew jdj would die out after his 1st period spurt. Now jc knows to stay away from the underhook and would expect he wins the next time as well.
- JG - got desperate with his shots... too bad. Should have finished in the 1st period. Still feel good about him though
Zain - nothin. Sucks when you wrestle well, get a fall, and it just meets expectations!
Nolf - again, no shots, should merit stalling. He simply ran out of time.. I know he wanted to turn him
GM - the way Jordan wrestled makes you wonder if Rasheed wouldn't have had a takedown or two. Don't know if the 'neck twinge' is serious. GM needs more offense. Great job... Think Jordan may have wt cutting issues as well
Nickal - too much respect early on and a reliance of trying to get an underhook. 3rd period proved he didn't need it. Fun to watch him roll!
Mouse - if he shot more, he could have buried him. well done, great rides!
MM - nothin.... meets expectations.... good workout on his TDs
Jan - was a little disapointed... thought he could show better... took a few desperate shots and paid for them. Didn't look like the same JJ... wonder if it is because he knows what or who is going to be next...

Good show. Was wrong on my 'over' with 7 wins. Happy that at least 2 of the losses could have gone the other way.
Wow - BIGs are going to be grand.... seating is going to be so important in order to see fantastic finals!

I'm taking the opposite viewpoint on Johnson. He was severely overmatched but kept wrestling. Ideally his technique and setups would be cleaner, but he did just join the team 3 months ago. Many better wrestlers would've quit or gone catatonic from the shock and awe..

Compare that to 157 ... better to lose 19-6 than to actually try to win.

Tomasello was not stalling, I'm sorry. That's Hawkeyesian. But I do like Nico's chances a little more than I did before today. Penn State wrestled great. The only thing that puzzled me was Jimmy taking terrible shots. I thought tOSU was a little under-tanned

Absolutely agree with you EJ. Snyder is a beast and total mismatch yet JJ kept coming. Having watched Snyder rag doll Haines in high school and then win worlds as a teenager, I expect him to to be high on the podium in March. I came away from tonight's match with a ton of respect for JJ.

I personally think Mouse wrestled an amazing match. He had a game plan of "Matt Browning" Courts. Heavy on the head with two hands downward pressure on the neck. He completely negated any offense Courts had by doing so and really tired him out, which in part enabled the huge ride. Mouse wrestled really smart and won a match easily and cleanly against a guy he couldn't beat last year. I think that if he's healthy he's a near lock for AA. Sure anything can happen, but he's clearly put the work in and wrestles with composure and focus, is aggresive on his feet and tough on top. Can't wait to see him go at Big 10's and Nationals.

I think jimmy is all the way back from the scuffle debacle....BUT. ...his not finishing shots has been his in match problem all year and doesn't seem to be going anywhere. I think his March success is going to be defined by his draw and a little lady luck.

Kid has the talent to win it all but I'm afraid we better prepare ourselves for a blood round gnashing of teeth.

Aside from Zain, I think Conway and McCutcheon are two most improved wrestlers on this team. Really nice young men too.

Yes, especially their offense. Both were solid, fundamentally solid wrestlers, but both of them have offenses that are significantly upgraded from last year. Both are dangerous wrestlers in that they have motors and grind their opponents and are a threat to bonus when their opponents simply run out of gas. Conway was on the verge of turning JDJ the entire latter half of the 3rd period - if that match goes another minute, I think Conway MDs him and quite possibly pins him. Mouse also looked like he had Courts on the ropes and was on the verge of turning him.

Just my 2 cents. Normally I would put some sort of effort into trying to be a little nice with what I am about to write, but I really don't believe the subject deserves the effort to be nice.

I appreciate and applaud Jan Johnson everytime he steps onto the mat. If given the opportunity I will shake his hand and tell him thank you.
When discussing Jan Johnson's efforts, anybody who chooses to use the word "disappointed" to discribe their personal satisfaction with the young man's efforts - well that particular person is a phucking idiot.

The single best response to Jan after every match is, "good job or thata boy".

Agree with that and will second it. The kid, a freshman who didn't even plan on wrestling this year, was wrestling a freaking World Champion - IOW, he could have possibly been an Olympic Champion except how the years fall! Jan Johnson was wrestling one of the best wrestlers in the world and he didn't give up, hang his head or quit - he even shot and got to Snyder's legs on the last takedown where Snyder countered. I give the kid credit, he refused to back down or run away despite being severely over-matched. Kid has guts.

I concur. JJ is very impressive in his willingness to do this for his school and state imo. True freshman-football player-way under sized-. I think it speaks so highly to his personal character that he is doing it. We discussed last night what a neat thing to do for the wrestling program and how cool of the football coach to support it. JJ is someone I would be very proud to know.

I agree El-Jefe & Needanap,
Had the good fortune of being ringside for the 285 bout. Wish everyone could see Jan's facial expressions while wrestling. He was doing what Penn State wrestlers do. Even though not successful against a talent like Snyder, he was attacking and...should I say it...enjoying the moment, while giving the best he had.

that's good to hear.... as I wasn't ringside, just a tv observer. I'll never question his guts or courage or anything like that... just didn't think he looked like has before. Of course, Snyder has a lot to do with that.

Agreed, I think everyone needs to put Jan in the proper context. What he is doing now, was not what he had planned on doing. Cael asked him if he would be willing to help out his school and the team and Jan agreed to do it. Not having the proper amount of time in the room to be fully prepared, there would be some kids that would not do it, afraid they might embarrass themselves. In the process, there have been quite a few matches that he has saved us from the other team getting valuable bonus points, all while giving top notch effort, as opposed to just going out there and laying on the mat like a stiff.

Conaway is a senior. He has been around long enough for people to know his name.

On Jan's last shot when he got countered for the TD and TF he gave a wry smile at the end that I thought was great. It was as if to say "well sh*t, what are ya gonna do?" He knew he was well overmatched, appreciate the effort

Excellent post. Only mistake I saw was Conway. HR board does this often. Starting to confuse our guys?

Think about that for a moment. Now I agree 100%, but freshman Zpain beat a 4x national champ and he is Most improved! Scary! BTW Jan Johnson is my personal MVP, his effort is above and beyond. Thanks Jan, hope to see you on Saturdays and Eventually Sunday's.
