TrackWrestling interviews with Nolf, Retherford, Bo, CS, and Kyle Snyder

Nolf: 'I just do whatever I want and have fun with it'
(Nolf entertaining on and off mat)

Like what he said about MDW Award - you can only focus on the guy you're wrestling and sensing what you can do to set up a move or catch them out of position (i.e., use their momentum against them, etc...). You can't be focused on something that is completely extraneous to what is actually "going on" on the mat.

Hall's match a good example - that guy made a very slight mistake in regards to pushing into Hall with his head stuffed and Hall jumped on it so quickly with that pancake / cement mixer (I always get themy confused as to which direction the throw goes on the underhook side), it was over in a blink....Hall was on it and had it locked that quickly which is a function of being totally focused and "in the moment" of your match.

This season has been a blast!

My only disappointment is that we won't get to see another Nolf v IMar match.

To me Nolf has a gift of being very conscious of everything going on when wrestling. He is in tune. He is very focused. He has the ability to sense, identify and capitalize on every position. His thought process during a match is very advanced and is what makes him great. He has some very good physical attributes too.

Mental is to physical as 3 is to 1.

BTN, I think Gibbons, called it as a "Lower-Leg Cradle" as Nolf was in the process of advancing the pinning combination (i.e., pressuring his one leg upward from the ankle with one hand, while leveraging his neck with his other arm/hand). I believe that is the correct call on that move which is a modification of a traditional Cradle at the knee which attempts to collapse the opponent at the waist - a Lower-Leg Cradle brings leg up using ankle instead of around knee. After collapsing him to his back, Nolf switched to a "cement mixer" pancake-hold finish to flatten him out. But I think the initial move that got DeCarlo to his back is called a "Lower-Leg Cradle".

I agree. He grabs the leg and uses it for leverage to turn him. He then ends ups releasing it. Was getting close to potentially dangerous. Flow guy said that your not supposed to be able to do all that. Nolf's length and strength is also top notch.

Nolf hardly has a plan. He goes with the flow and takes what is offered and nearly always capitalizes. He as such an arsenal and has the presence of mind to apply that arsenal. Very rarely does it not work out for him.. He is such an advanced thinker while wrestling. What a treat.

Jason Nolf is the anti-Bo Jordan: he even made the interview fun. And his answers about giving up points and about Martinez going up to 165 -- both where a big, so what, doesn't matter, don't care at all.

Zain ... I barely heard his actual words -- what I heard was "Future Penn State head coach in waiting." Not in any hurry for the current guy to leave (duh!), but he's gotta retire someday, and we'll be OK when that day comes.

When another wrestler gets in on your leg, the natural instinct is to defend it. Nolf, and he is not the only one on the team, they view it as an offensive opportunity and they go for it. Very difficult for an opposing wrestler to deal with that type of approach. You're dammed if you do and you're dammed if you don't.

Agree 84. A few of our guys look to turn an attack by an opponent into offensive/pinning combinations. Is this the next evolution in wrestling? I've heard it mentioned the combination of various martial arts with wrestling are leading to this type of progression.

Loved that interview! I always thought Nolf was a cyborg, but seeing him joke and laugh I guess he is human after all.

I love the way Mr. Nolf places his ankle bands perfectly on the mat the same way every time....like he's in The Marines and it is a Marine protocol or something.

He is sharp and precise just like his post-match routine with the ankle-bands!

During Nolf's 1st takedown it looked like he was attempting a leg cradle.
He had a far-side cradle. Normally that's applied from the other (right) side of DeCarlo's body, or while in a left-side cross-body ride.

But that's not Jason. Instead of hooking the leg or stepping across the back to the right side, he'd rather step over the head and do something the opponent could not have practiced against, all the better if it's jaw-dropping.

He can leg cradle you from a lot of different positions....NOLF IS UNREAL !!!! WILL BONUS EVERYONE THIS YEAR !!!! EVERYONE....

Have never seen a true "Leg Cradle" at NCAA level (have seen it at junior & scholastic level). Leg Cradle is a very deliberate move where you have back leg hooked at ankle with your leg ("ankle trap") bur you can't quite lock hands on Near-Side Cradle, so you spiral ride into opponent towards their head using your leg hook to drag their leg & hip with you. When you get high enough on spiral ride, you step over opponent's head with your front free leg, hook head around neck and lock Cradle together with the power of your legs locking legs at ankle. You then literally dive across the opponent with your upper-body & hips which is what takes them to their back with Cradle locked in using both legs instead of arms. However, it is a very deliberate move and only works against wrestlers that are badly out-matched and are powerless to change their "body-positioning" or simply don't understand what's happening (it is a bit like a boa constricted when it takes its time after it has its prey wrapped up).

Look at the future of the NLWC. Possibly adding Zain, Nolf, Nickal, et. al. Doesn't Taylor still wrestle out of the NLWC even though he is affiliated with another club?

After the Paris Freestyle tourney, DT said in an interview he still wrestles NLWC and rolls with Casey, Cael, Varner & Bo Nickal.

Even though he has that Titan Mercury affiliation.

Watching the Paris freestyle matches, DT's singlet said "NLWC" although he was registered as TMWC.

I don't know the details.

Yes. So do Nico and Matt Brown, and so does Morgan McIntosh (or at least will be, I'm not sure of the exact timing, if he has completed his Army basic training yet). And Jordan Conaway, at least for this year. And Frank Molinaro isn't done yet.

But, yeah, Zain, Jason, Bo, and Wreck will almost certainly have spots waiting for them, and I doubt any of them decline. And maybe others.

Snyder gives a great interview and is so damn likeable. He makes it so easy to want to cheer for him as an American representing our country and all of us. Someone that good and could run his mouth like say a Thomas Gilman or PD3 yet he's humble and respectful to the sport and his opponents.

Believe Titan Mercury Wrestling Club is essentially a US All-Star team from all the other US clubs organized for international competition, so.....The Magic Man is a member of both the NLWC and TMWC (again, TMWC puts together teams for International Competitions assembled from all of the US-based regional clubs I believe)

The only thing wrong with Kyle Snyder is his choice of college.

I spoke to him outside MSG between sessions (or maybe Th morning?) He was very nice when I introduced myself to him. Very enthusiastic, for sure. He needs the opposite of the amps from Spinal Tap....

He's certainly enthusiastic that's for sure. I can't hate on a guy that obviously has such passion and love for the sport. It would be nice if you could turn his switch off once in awhile though... lol
I remember him calling last year's NCAA semifinal between Zain and Pantaleo. While waiting for a period to start (Zain was to be on top), Sparks said he'd love to spend 2 minutes underneath Zain, just to experience what it was like, but only if there was some way to guarantee it wouldn't hurt. I'm sure he was serious, but it was pretty funny.

Even funnier when Zain locked up a bow and arrow on the edge and dragged Pantaleo all over the mat before turning him, so there would be no wriggling out of it. Sparks had to be thinking "please hope Zain doesn't take me up on that!"

Is it typical for all wrestlers to drill after their matches as Nevills was doing in the background during Cael's interview?

Or was this a result of Nick's match with Snyder? Nick's a great wrestler and getting better. Snyder is on another level.

It's conditioning work -- best time to stretch your lungs is right after a match.

Restore i get the leg craddle technique, but at that moment i asked my buddy, is Nolf trying some crazy farside leg craddle? It made us laugh cause Nolf is crazy good and not afraid to try anything.

There's probably some instruction there as well. That'll have to be reinforced in practice, can't expect it to completely sink in when he's near spent.
