"The monthly U.S. trade deficit in goods hit a record high in August, despite President Donald Trump's 2016 campaign promises to reduce it dramatically by negotiating new trade deals and getting tough on unfair foreign trade practices, a Commerce Department report showed on Tuesday."

"Trump's 2016 campaign promises."

Ha. ha. Ha.

"The report also showed that U.S. exports to China continue to lag behind the pace needed to meet Trump's goal under a "phase one" trade deal signed in January."

No kidding!

"China figures: Under the "phase one" deal signed in January, China is supposed to increase purchases of U.S. goods and services by $200 billion above 2017 levels over two years. That includes $76.7 billion in increased purchases in 2020 and $123.3 billion in 2021."

That's not happening.

U.S. goods exports to China in January through August were $69.5 billion, significantly below the $80.2 billion figure for the first eight months of 2017. Exports in August alone to China, though, totaled $11 billion, the highest since March 2018.

"For Trump to meet his target, China must dramatically increase purchases in the remainder of the year."

Told ya.
