It may have already happened but I think this year people will see certain schools push players into the Transfer Portal (the players being so called "deadwood" ), so that the school can take 25 plus players every year. The Transfer Portal becomes the solution for the negative charge of "processing" that is attached to certain coaches. This is not all bad because the players have a chance to go to a school where they can play rather than sit on the bench (although for most it will be at a lower division level). Which Schools? Once again the SEC will lead the way. By the way, what happens to players who enter the Transfer Portal but don't Transfer (no scholarship offer?). Have they lost their original scholarship?

Which would be no different than before the portal when schools pushed end of bench guys to transfer.

Depends on whether the coach at the original school decides to renew their scholarship, which is also the same as before.

Seems like baseball free agents often have some sort of opt out clause if they sign a multi year deal. I guess one advantage in this would be if the player over performs and the market shoots up, he can be free to see what the market may offer him.
Recruits should know that a coaches job is to recruit "over" the previous years talent. If one is suddenly "trapped" on the depth chart, they can head for greener pastures. Change is rarely embraced. Time will tell if this trend lasts and where it might lead.
Let's hope each position has a log jam like the 1958 SF Giants.....Bill White, Willie McCovey and Orlando Cepeda at first base.

Don't disagree. The players wanted more freedom; and that's a good thing. But with freedom comes responsibilities. They will now have to manage their time with their chosen schools. live everything, the transfer portal is a two edged sword; Yin yang.

I haven’t seen much speculation about this being behind the mass of PSU guys in the portal this year. Not all of them were pushed - guys like Wade and a few others were wanted - but I think this staff is savvy when it comes to roster management.

I am not talking about CJF I think both Dabo and Nick Saban may take 30 recruits this year. Dump 10 a year in the Portal.

this may force some more regulation around the annual limits vs just the 85 number.

Anyone who doesn't think CJF is ahead of the curve and using this as an "opt out clause" is lost. I think the message is "come here and be great and if you get buried on the depth chart"....there is a second life elsewhere and we will facilitate it.
