TV programming note: Tans vs. Tigers, 8 pm, ESPN3

Synon just decked DiJulius with a monster bear hug. Crowd going nuts! 10-6 tan guys after 3 ...

Quick recap during break:

285: Tavanello WBF over Romero. Got real lucky too, got thrown to his back in the first (double overhook, pull back, roll thru) and barely escaped that. Was 7-7 after 1. Tav got a single into a turk for the fall.

125: Tomasello MD McGhee 10-1. McGhee stalled like mad the entire match. Tomasello's shots were real crisp.

133: Synon WBF 3rd period. Was down 3-2. Had bear hugged JDJ to his back in the 2nd as well, but no takedown out of bounds. Same move in the 3rd but started in the center of the mat.

141: Manley 4-3 over Micah -- hit a HC at the buzzer for the win. Jordan's takedown was off a wild Manley HC, took it from his knees, missed badly, Jordan fell on his leg.

Manley mostly blocked and wrestled from his knees, but Jordan didn't exactly wow here -- no shots unless you count when he fell onto Manley's leg on the missed HC. Must have been a long bus ride.

10-9 tan.

149: Mayes 11-3 over Burcher. Blast double from another area code in the first, pancake in the 2nd that Burcher gave up 2 to save the pin. Reversal in the 3rd. Burcher got a cheap takedown near the end off a Mayes shot when Mayes tried to get a neutral fall instead of the takedown. Plus a whole lotta tough riding plus bottom stalling.

13-10 SEC champs at intermission.

If Hunter Stieber doesn't come back healthy, aOSU gets nothing at 149 this year. This match was nowhere near as close as the score -- Burcher simply wasn't competitive at all, and frankly didn't even try to be.

157: Ryan 10-2 MD over Fortuna. Ryan has a good left HC, hit it 3x. Plus another T2 on a spin-behind counter to a bad shot by Fortuna. Ryan looked pretty good, not in Nolf's class, but could be trouble if Nolf isn't 100%.

14-13 Tan.

165: BoJo 6-4 over Lewis. Lewis should've won the match, had a brilliant strategy but screwed up the execution. Jordan got 2 takedowns in the first, then took down -- big mistake. Lewis rode him out with a hard crossface the entire 2nd period, down 4-3 after 2. Lewis then took neutral. Had he scored a takedown, he probably would've ridden Jordan out with the crossface and won. Instead he took a less-than-clean shot, Jordan converted, and that was that.

Jordan did one other notable thing: in the first he threw in the right leg, but it wasn't to ride legs -- it was bait. He tried to sucker Lewis into a near-side cradle. Looks like Jordan's been working with Jaggers on that move.

174: Butler MD Prezzia 13-3. 5 takedowns by Butler, lots of variety: a low outside single, a HC, spun out of a Russian tie into a single, an inside trip. Prezzia hilariously got dinged 2x in 5 sec -- for backing up and then for stepping out.

Butler looked real good. OSU getting nothing here in March either.

17-17 tie with 2 matches left.

184: Miklus 15-0 TF over Courts in the 3rd. Courts put on his cement shoes.

Miklus 6-0 after 1 on a low single and a far-side cradle. Miklus with another low single at the 2nd buzzer. Down 9-0 after 2, Courts took neutral and then promptly gave up 2 stalling points -- one of them for backing away while Miklus crawled after him on his knees. That was a real pants wetter. Then Miklus with a takedown and a claw tilt for the TF.

Courts just looked awful.

22-17 SEC champs with JDen Cox left.

Wow, you said it. Miklus was all hustle but Courts looked like he didn't even want to be there. He didn't even show up.

197: Cox MD 13-2 over Martin on 5 takedowns. Martin at least tried. Cox's last 2 scores were on Martin shots.

26-17 SEC final.

Courts is a fat toad. And I will repeat, Bojo can not beat Ringer with those deficiencies on bottom. I laugh that there were some on TheMat who were thinking freshman Jordan would give DT a match. Taylor would have destroyed him on top.

Courts needs to be defibrillated. That was an embarrassment. Again, he got dinged for stalling points 2x while down 9 points after choosing neutral. And one of those calls was while Miklus crawled after him.

Ryan has in the past (last year or the year before) said D1 wrestling is a privilege. If he believes that, then Courts should get benched.

Hideki Irabu is offended by calling Courts a fat toad.

Jordan didn't have choice in the 2nd period; rather, Lewis had choice and took up. Jordan had choice in the 3rd period and wisely took neutral.

Thanks for the correction. Good call by BoJo ... and he would've lost if Lewis had taken a better shot after beating him down the entire 2nd.

wowzer. I may have to go back and watch a replay of this match.

Martin keeping his tanshirt is interesting. I did question whether it was a wise move to remove it.

Nice job on the p-b-p

I still don't know why so many people think BoJo will walk through the field at 174. He is going to lose a little bit of his strength advantage that he normally has at 165 and I'm sure he is going to struggle on bottom against some of the stronger guys at 174.

BoJo didnt take down in the 2nd. Lewis actually took top! He rode the dog out of him and BoJo took neutral in the 3rd. BoJo actually got hit with 2 stalls in the 2nd period.

I would really like to see BoJo v. BoN! That would be an epic battle! We may see it yet since Ryan is leaving the door open by not pulling MyMars tanshirt!

Jordan will be just fine at 174, if that's here he ends up. Lots can happen between now and March, but right now BoJo would probably be the favorite to win it all at 174. He's not gonna get outmuscled, and the only guys who give him problems on bottom are known hammers (Dieringer, Isaac Jordan, and, yeah, Lewis). Lewis chose top for a reason, ya know?

Johnny orangejuice finally gets burnt playing with fire.

Courts looked awful...actually beyond awful. Darth Ryan teaching moment?

tale of the tape....tO$U called for stalling in 7 of 10 matches....

I feel an excuse coming?

Well, it IS about a 10-hr bus ride to Columbia (if they get caught in traffic around Indy or STL). And maybe they had the flu.

Average Official did a real good job with the stall calls. Called them in all 3 positions. I thought he could've dinged McGhee a bit more on feet, but otherwise nice job making both sides wrestle. Tanning Bed U. needed a lot more encouragement.

Ryan's in a real jam at 184. He has zero chance at a team title unless someone reaches the podium at that weight, and that someone is Courts. But Courts is so hit-and-miss -- in effort, not just results. Of course, if the stars don't align anyway (Stieber isn't right, etc.), then Ryan might have an easier time sacrificing Courts.

The other thing that's gotta be killing Ryan: when someone wanders off the reservation like this, you look for team leaders to step up and bring him back. But who's the upper-weight team leader with Snyder on Olympic tanshirt? Among the upper weights, Courts is the only senior and the only returning All-American ... He should be setting an example for the others, and in a way he is.
