the TV in my mother-in-law's room is on its last leg. Wife and I are wanting to get another one. 40-50 inches or so. doesn't have to be a smart TV, but I don't want to get a cheap (quality not price) one either. She spends all day watching her novellas and often leaves the TV on even when she's not in there, so it needs to last. Anyone have any thoughts?

I hear there's a place, a physical place, where there are people in blue shirts with yellow and black logos, who can answer questions like these.

Apparently it's more than one place too... multiple.

We have a TV that is gradually going bad. I went to Costco and found that it’s possible to get a nice 40” Samsung with 120 Hz refresh rate for $400. I haven’t shopped for TV’s in years and can’t believe how inexpensive they’ve become.

Samsung’s are good too. Four of my six TV’s are Samsungs and the other two are Sony and all of them are really good. I got my daughter a 40” Samsung smart TV on sale for $400 and she loves it. You can’t really go wrong these days with most TV’s.

Get a Samsung. Rated the best. We have 3 in the House.

We have all Samsungs. Clear picture, good sound. One is pretty old and still works fine.

Thanks guys, I've been looking at Costco and Amazon, and there are some brands i've never heard of out there. Just wanted to see if anyone mentioned them. Sounds like Samsung is the clear favorite thus far.

I've had great luck with Samsung. Have 5 of them now. Have a 55 inch Samsung that is hanging outside on my lanai for the last couple years and zero problems as well. Great TV's

Rtings is my go to for tv reviews. They have a ton of info. Maybe too much

Get a brand name one. Don't worry if it's a "smart" TV or not, with all the devices available that do the same thing (Chromecast, Fire Stick, etc)

I bought two LGs late last year. Both are 4K. One is 55 inches and the other is 45. The 4k is worth it. So is the smart TV. They both had Netflix, Amazon and Hulu preloaded, no boxes necessary. I love them. I agree with above, choose a decent brand. I settled on the LG because the pictures are very similar across all brand and I liked the frame of the LG (almost no frame at all). I also like the sound quality.

Had a TV repairman recently tell me that Sony has overtaken Samsung for top quality TVs.

I have Samsung, Sony and Vizio and they all have been great (so far). I would just avoid the off-brand names as you really don't know what you will get quality-wise.

Get the highest refresh rate available. Spend a few more bucks, but happier in the end.

So, this brings up a question I have regarding TVs.

Is there a TV that I can purchase so that I can connect my laptop to it, and have a large screen to work with, as opposed to the small screen that is associated with the laptop? I have seen presentations at work where they connect to a large TV, but they use a hard wire, and I was looking to see if a wireless connection might be available.

Edit: And I know what you mooks are thinking, and no it's not just about porn.

I will say that the off brand LED's make great computer monitors. Just make sure it has a VGA port.

I believe you can do this with a Google Chromecast (and likely competing devices like Amazon Fire TV stick, etc.). Costs about $30. Plug it into an open HDMI port on the TV, connect to it from your PC once and bingo, you should have an option to stream to the TV wirelessly. Be sure to make sure it will work with your PC type, OS, and the apps you plan to mirror on the TV, etc. but I think this is quite simple.

Right...you have to have your PC and Chromecast on the same Wifi network.

As others have already stated, you can get a Google Chromecast for $30, and then from your PC, fire up a Google Chrome web browser, and cast your desktop or just your webpage to the Chromecast that is attached to your TV. Some TV's now a days come with Google Chromecast built in, which is also a plus.
