Tweet of the night...

Didn't Urbie try to turn down the invitation to the playoff and suggest that PSU should go instead? Or was that a dream?

Akron! Akron! Akron!

I put him right next to Delaney in my pantheon of "heroes." Screw him and the horse he rode in on.

He's just afraid the same thing will happen to him this year.

Urby's covering all bases here. It's unlikely to happen to him this year, or any year, but it could. The Big Ten East is going to be a dogfight for years to come, and he's not going to win the conference every single year.

words. I hate when words aren't followed by actions. I can't hear what you are saying because your actions speak too loudly.

Didn't he put PSU in his top 4 at the end of the regular season? What else was he supposed to do?

Yep. I'd be more impressed if Urban was saying this last year to Herby and his "eye test" garbage. Saying it now means nothing.

Changing the subject here but what the heck happened to Clemson? For decades Clemsom was a middle of the road program. It seems like all of a sudden they've become a national power with consistently high ranked recruiting classes. Last year they win the national championship. This year they're ranked 5th pre-season. They only have 11 commits so far this year but they have the #1 and #3 ranked kids in the country. I guess some of it is due to Dabo Sweeny but it must be more than that. Any thoughts?

South Carolina with Spurrier created a pipeline to the state is my sense.

Both teams and the state were somewhat meaningless. Then USC started paying coaches and winning. Then Clemson followed suit.

They started paying recruits as well? ;)

Maybe, but I'm not going to go there. I get the sense it's a state thing. It's OK to go 8-4 if your cross town rival is 7-5.

Once the other team starts winning, then suddenly your mediocrity becomes less acceptable.

Also the downfall of FSU at the end of Bobby's tenure there opened the door for Clemson.

I can say that for whatever reason, Clemson is a very 'hot' school for high school kids now. I live in NJ and there are multiple kids from our high school going to Clemson and it is considered a super cool school to go to. I have not been there, but from what I have heard, the campus is beautiful and obviously the weather is spectacular.

as for football, Dabo Swinney is a really good coach. And they lucked out with some super college QB's. And in college football, if you have a great playmaking QB, the whole game changes. Look at Texas A&M with Johnny Football and what they did and now what they are doing. Look at Oregon with Mariotta.

Agreed. I think it's impossible to overstate the importance of the QB position in today's college game, and maybe football in general.

It all comes down to the HC. Look at a school in our backyard yard - Temple. They hired a couple of good guys there and now their program has gone from the worst to respectable.

Pure coach speak by Meyer.....tear your own team down and build up the opponent. Surprised anyone is giving it much credit coming 9 months after the fact.

Not to be cynical, but...

1. I really don't put much stock in anything that Meyer says;
2. As for Clemson, it's a beautiful campus and in my opinion, Dabo is an excellent coach with a lot of passion for the Tigers. But that being said, Clemson used to live on NCAA probation (pick a sport) and I don't believe that they've ever overly taxed their athletes academically. I used to share an office with a former Clemson punter who more or less confirmed my second point. In addition, I had to live with a full-sized poster of William "the refrigerator" Perry in the office while Clemson was pushing him for the Heisman. Let me tell ya, that thing took up a considerable amount of wall space. In regard to Clemson recruiting, I will just just say that I don't think that the tigers have changed their stripes (slight alteration of the leopard/spots metaphor) and they're not unlike their SEC neighbors.
