UA AA game - surprising number of guys who already signed are still playing in this game. traditional view has been these guys play the game to show off, do the "hats" picking and/or show their potential to get a better offer.
Adrian Martinez - QB headed to Nebraska was asked about committing to the "school" with coaches in transition. he very clearly said that committing to the school is unrealistic as the coach style and relationship is what you commit to. he did not hesitate. other QB with him totally agreed.
this is probably what explains the angst among fans during the December period of coach turnover. it would seem all would benefit by the Feb date moving back to April or May, and add a 3rd date before season.
So a July/Aug signing week before season (helps all the kids who know for sure what they want and forces offers to be "real")
Post season December week - provides another date - i had no issue with that, but allow any players who signed LOI before season to have their obligation cancelled (if they want) if the school's HC departs for any reason. that would keep the risk fair for all.
Final signing date say April/May would allow more academic issues to flush out and coach changes to get settled for players. seems like some format like that would help both players and coaches, and still provide some level of commitment on part of players.
i would love to see a system that prevented contact with any player who has not completed an academic clearance or demonstration, but realize that is not realistic or simple.
