UCF MNC?

As I recall, we got some flack from the NCAA for doing that after 1994 (for a time--I don't think we claim that now).

we should have done this a few times

Yep. JVP was so pissed after the 1973 team got no national love (12-0, #5 rank), that he said he had taken his own poll... the Paterno Poll... and PSU was voted #1. I think the team got rings.

The New York Times poll in 1994 had us at #1, and we had that painted onto the back of the south end scoreboard for a season or two. The NCAA said no go for some reason and we took it off. Imo, we should have said too bad, and kept declaring 1994 at least as co-champs, and then same with 1973, 1969, 1968. In my feeble mind, I will always consider both 1969 and 1994 as co-NC seasons for us. My vote counts!
No playoff? Can't really say who 'won' the NC back then. I would have liked our chances in 1977 with 1 loss, and in the 2 loss seasons of 1981 and 1991, we would have been a very tough team to beat. Throw 1971 in there, even with the last game loss at Tennessee. Give Joe a month to prepare, and PSU was a tough team to beat far more often than not.

Pitt is going to have a serious issue with this. Only Pitt is allowed to do this.

I say why not? Not sure that they will ever have another 13-0 season, let alone a good win in a NY6 bowl. Take care of your players and coaches and students and fans when you can. Make this the high watermark season and play it for all it is worth until the next one comes along.... if it ever does. No one is arguing that they were the best of the G5 teams, and the system is set up to all but block the G5s from serious consideration for the 4 team playoff (invitational!), so go make your own fun, UCF!

I'll agree they are wrong to do this if you can show me another major sport where serious fans call the championship "mythical"

Hey other schools... just play a cupcake schedule, run the table and declare yourself champions!

So me another major sport that is set up this way? Name a sport in which a division/conference winner isn't in a playoff.

FBS is a joke. Anything less than a 16 team playoffs means the declared champion is "mythical"

I've always thought the 1977 team was better than the 1978 team--just a bad loss to a pesky Kentucky team (who would have been SEC co-champs were it not for being on probation). Weather related, as I recall. I know there was a bad rainstorm during part of the game, as it was one of the few times I left a game early (shivering almost uncontrollably will do that).

Yes, I also think '77 was somewhat better than '78. Close, but '77 was better on Offense overall. Receivers were better in '77.

The '77 Kentucky game was weird.... rainy first half, PSU led 20-10 at the half. Weather cleared up for the 2nd half, Kentucky outscored us 14-0. That Kentucky team had Derrick Ramsey at QB (a very good TE in the NFL) and Art Still at DE, another very good pro and an uncle of our own Devon Still, iirc. Ramsey beat us in '76 at Kentucky also, by breaking off a couple long runs.

Our offense really struggled that '76 game, too, but it was the game when Fusina established himself as the starter at QB after coming in in relief of John Andress in that game. We started to get better after that, and that led to the success of '77 and '78. Sort of like the changes made in early '67 led to the success of '68 and '69.

If UCF wants a shot at a national championship, they should join a real conference.
