Update from Ryan Bagwell: Feds to withhold 570,000 pages from PSU investigation

Hard to believe there's 570,000 pages to even begin with. Sounds like they aren't releasing anything. ;).

That said- Feds are withholding them from who? Were they going to release some report? Sorry but I stopped following the fed investigation long ago.

Saw another tweet that said the Feds agreed to limit their focus to the second mile only after an agreement with the PA AG office. Is that true? Lost all respect for them if they allowed the AG office to stop them from looking at everything including CSS.

Yeah, 570,000 pages from what investigation?

When you think about it- how could they get to 570,000 pages (actually more than that as they are just withholding 570,000)?

I mean, the only people who knew anything were CSS who likely aren't talking much with charges pending, MM who likely isn't talking much with trials pending, and Paterno who has passed. Courtney has attorney client privilege that PSU won't waive (by the way- if they do for the Feds does that mean CSS can release that info now?)

How many pages can you get from Raykovietz (sp?), the SM BoT, and possibly Dranov and MMs father?

On top of that- how much new, unpublicized 'golden info' can they have gotten that requires them to hold back 570,000 pages? Seriously.

This is very likely a white collar crime investigation. Think financial records...570,000 pages.....probably whatever is within the statute of limitations for fraud. The scope of the investigation may include contracts between companies affiliated with TSM Board Members and PSU...and there are a lot of those.

Good point on the financials related to the SM and possibly PSU. Are the Feds releasing anything soon?

Is this related to the Clery Act investigation? I think PhillipInTheValley posted a year ago or so that the department of education had apparently wrapped up their investigation and was working on the final report, and that PSU expecting a 7 figure fine or thereabouts.

Frankly, I imagine this amount of documents is typical of any large federal government enterprise. Call it a manifestation of bureaucratic morass. Also, PSU receives a lot of money from the Feds for research (I think ARL received an $880 million contract from the Navy last year) so when the Feds feel they have cause to investigate something they may decide to look at other things as well. And if PSU didn't have there house in order for this investigation then the tentacles of the octopus that is any federal agency will find justification to look into other areas of the university. I know this from dealing with the FDA. I'm not sure that the volume of documents really means anything.

Heard it was a missprint.

Ryan clarified on Twitter that it's part of a DOJ investigation(s).

Excellent point. And this happens all time to both federal contractors and non-federal contractors alike. If, for example, the DOL is auditing your company, and they find an issue with, say, the I-9's, they will then invite USCIS to the audit party.

Suffice it say these auditors aren't your friends.

Call me crazy, but with Freeh's Fed contacts and Fina's AG contacts, I'm not sure how much the Feds are on the side of truth. Hope I'm pleasantly surprised, but won't hold my breath. Could just be a way to keep documents under wraps.

Must be an issue of national security lol.......

It is entirely possible that could be the case.

Only folks who think that PSU is just a cow college would rule that out. And, to be fair, I am not saying that you have actually ruled that out altogether.

However, it is true that we have zero reason to believe it is the case.
