Update: Score 2 for the good guys! Menet and Fries commit to Penn State and (hopefully) ensure we will not see oline play like last year for a long time. Really great job by the staff in filling that need and building depth there. On the other hand MSU continues to roll picking up a great one and fast rising Panasuik, who happens to play our current biggest position of need, DT. Moved both OLB/DE hybrids Brown and Toney up. Brown had a great visit yesterday and Toney, while his tweets are protected, has a picture of himself walking out onto the field at Beaver stadium as his main pic (this might have been there for a while and I didn't know it). It will be interesting to see if we would take both with Betiku still on the board, and Hudson who is a similar prospect. I have to assume Franklin must think he is going to free up 10 scholarships to get to 25 in this class though if he offered a Punter, who we very well might get, in addition to Nordin. So maybe he would take Brown and Toney and still pursue Hudson. Two moves I won't make that people want me to: will not move Hamlin down or move Colon up until I see more evidence that we are out of or ahead in those races as I see them. I think the next commit is Pryts, Ferns, or Jordan (whose Twitter love is split between PSU and MD pretty equally). Let me take a second and say again that Mike Farrell is a moron for disparaging kids who he invited to an elite camp. And lastly please enjoy this tweet from Shane Simmons from last week (kid is doing work for us!!):

And then one from last night:

Commit Watch:
4* S Pryts, 3* OLB Hudson, 3* DT Wheeler

Very Good Chance:
4* CB Hamlin, 4* LB Ferns, 4* DL Dioubate, 4* DE Betiku, 4* DT Jordan, 3* OLB Brown, 3* OLB Toney

In The Battle:
4* WR Nixon, 4* WR Diggs, 4* ATH Fuller, 4* TE Angeline, 4* DE Johnson, 4* OG Boudreaux, 4* TE Farrell, 3* DT Colon, 3* OT Niang, 3* DT Kamara, 3* CB Gilbert 3* WR Patterson, 3* S Givens, JC DT Chavis, JC DT Tanielu, 3* K Nordin, P Gillikin

Work Left To Do:
5* DT Gary, 4* TE Upshur, 4* CB Rene, 4* WR Smothers, 3* OLB Hansford

Have To Get Really Lucky:
4* OT Williams, 4* OG Davis, 4* DE Kareem, 4* WR Corley, 4* WR Hawkins

My opinion on where we stand with recruits based on rumors, where the coaching staff has made serious effort, offers, tweets (sometimes) and gut feeling. My categories(and their meanings) are Commit Watch (changed from Locks as to not offend recruiting gods), Very good chance(we sit very well with the recruit and are either the leader or perceived leader), In the Battle(We have a good shot and are equal to others or just slightly behind), Work left to do(there is another perceived leader or little information known on recruits intentions), Have to get really lucky(small chance to little to none).

I'll admit I have no real evaluation experience. but I have a feeling Cameron Brown is going to be a stud. Glad to see you move him up (for whatever its worth)

Nice recap, always appreciated.

I think Ferns favors WVU. Think he visited there last week, and has another visit scheduled for July. His brother is already there.

For a guy who seems to value academics a whole lot, going to WVU for engineering of any kind seems like a stretch.

Yes the brother angle is tough to overcome

WVU has a fine engineering program. My concern would be more from a linebacker standpoint. They don't exactly turn out a lot of NFL 'backers nor do they emphasis defense very much.

It's all about the DL line. While we're all focused on DT, rightfully so I might add. I wouldn't forget about DE. Many de's grow into DT's. I'm thinking a kid like Buchholz. Really would love to get Betiku and another DE to go with the 3 DT's whom I hope we get.

Looks reasonable to me. Q is whether the OL is full at 4, or if there is room for a 5th OL recruit. If CJF manages to open a full 25 scholarships I'd say they do take 5. But if he takes a punter and kicker?????

Remainder breakdown:
DT - 4 includes a JC player
DB - 2 or 3
P - 1
K - 1
WR - 1 or 2
LB - 2 or 3
DE - 2 or 3
QB - 0 or 1
RB - 0
OL - ????

As u mentioned, Hudson could play Safety or LB, and there are 2 recruits that look to be either DE's or LB's

I just don't see how he can get 25 openings.......

It depends on how many 4th year guys are contributing. Look at Class of 2012. If there's a player in that class and it appears they aren't in the rotation. I doubt they come back for a 5th. There are quite a few kids in that situation. Usually, one or two younger guys leave for other reasons too.

Serious question - how do we you have Hudson on commitment watch right now? I'm not sure I've seen a very clear indication that he is +90% to PSU or greater. Seems like it has been a little quiet on his recruitment lately.

Well I have him up there because he was super high on us after his visit compared to how he is after visiting other places (where as someone like Hamlin is high on every place he visits right after he visits them). Also, he seems to retweet about other Penn State commits more than any other school. And he has visited other places recently and hasn't had much hype on them as compared to when he was in State College. I don't know if he's waiting to see what other WPIAL kids are doing but I would not be surprised if any day I wake up I find out he's a PSU commit vs I would be surprised to hear he committed elsewhere without some noise first. So that is why I have him there.

Hey, if Ferns chooses WVU, he made the choice. He seems to be "thinking" about a future other than football. I'm sure he can get a really good education just about anywhere. WVU is a good school.
Just a story, my older brother has two Doctoral degrees, one from Rutgers and one from the U. of P. He told me he had to take two courses at a small school in New Jersey (Rowan) and that they were the best and most worthwhile of any courses he ever took. So, the point is you "can" get a good education at most schools. Most has to do with the teachers.
That being said, I hope we get him ;-)

Yea, I know how u get additional openings. I just don't see how enough turnover will happen to get to 25

Are we done with the OL this year? It looks that way to me.

If Dowrey, Gaia and Laurent all come back for a 5th year, I believe we're done. If one or two of them are disappointed at their standing on the depth chart. We might take one more.

I don't know about WVU being a good academic school. The kids from my school who went there were bottom of the barrel academically.

Not saying overall it is a "good" school. I just believe you "can" get a pretty good "education" just about anywhere. Because of my career I encountered an unusually large and varied group of "educated" people from a great many Colleges and Universities. In my experience the "school" and it's reputation was the least factor in ability to produce.
But, that is only my opinion and experience. I'm sure others will not agree.
Again, in any case I hope he chooses us :)

What about if Dowrey moves to DT?

Or if 1, 2 or all 3 of them don't look to be starters in 2016. Would their scholarships expire so we could sign 25 in the 2016 class?

I don't see Laurent starting this year, and really even getting much playing time. But I have been wrong in projecting the players on many occasions. He's behind Mangiro and probably Reiner. As thin as we were last year on the interior as well as at OT, the staff kept Mangiro at C and Laurent mostly on the bench. But I don't think either off Dowrey or Gaia play Center, and there seems to be more options developing at Guard, with Wright and Beh.

But my money is on all 3 coming back for their RS Sr seasons. We will still be short on mature OL depth in 2016, especially in the interior. And i still would not be surprised if Dowrey moves back to DT during fall camp.

As far as attrition goes, and opening up scholarships to get to a larger 2016 class, I'm thinking there are some WR/DB's that may move on given all the talent that came in at those positions in 2014 and 2015.

I see the 5th OL recruit question as more of a total class size issue than of a 2015/16 depth issue. The extra 2016 recruit would not likely play before 2018, 2017 at the very earliest so it would do nothing to help in the event 1 or 2 RS Sr's did not come back for 2016. And with the 12 OL recruits in the 14,15, and 16 classes we will have plenty of options by 2017 and 2018.

I still don't see the 2016 class bigger than 21-22. And at that size I don't see another OL spot. So if CJF does take another I see it as him believing the class will be closer to 23-25. Before this is written on disk somewhere, we'll probably have a 5th OL commit............................

Tough to compete with the brother thing but IMO Ferns & Dioubate are our top 2 targets. I'd hate to lose out on Ferns.

I notice the OL guys are all 6'5" or 6'6" and around 270lbs Good bet that number five will fit that profile
maybe someone like Boudreaux but I would rather see 3DTs and maybe a JC DT just sayin'

I think these are the kids with junior eligibility this year that may or may not forego their senior season next year:

Hack
Lynch
Dowrey, Gaia, Laurent, Palmer
Wilkerson
Kiley
, Lewis
A. Johnson
Schwan
Walker, Wartman, Wooten, Bell
J. Smith
Golden, A. Smith

IMO Hack and A. Johnson are the two most likely to declare for the NFL. Wilkerson, Kiley, Wooten, Golden, and A. Smith have been further down on the depth chart so we'll have to see what happens with them this season. I really don't see any of the OL leaving early but I've been surprised before.

Another OL recruit and 4 total DT's are not mutually exclusive. If your a just sayin guy, you might not know what that means......

I agree with you regarding the OL kids. We are still going to be light on interior line players in 2016 so if they stay the worse they will be is 2nd team.

I hate to talk about specific kids not coming back as we don't really know their situations and I am one that wants PSU to honor a kids chance to finish his degree. Hopefully with summer school all of the above will graduate by next Spring. Some want a grad degree, but that's a bonus for some that get to go to school for 5 years.

Lynch also could have a big year, 1100-1200 yards, and decide to take his chances with the NFL. I don't think that will happen as I believe we will have a rotation at RB and that a couple of the young kids will be busting some runs and take some carries away from Lynch.

I don't see Dowrey moving again. I think your numbers are going to be accurate. Just don't see 25. But, on the OL. Let's say, Mahon starts at LG and Mangiro at RG. Primary backup would be Gaia. Chaz Wright or Sorrell could push Dowrey on that 2nd team. And, if they beat him out. Not much point in coming back for a 5th. Gaia could be odd man out too. If Dowrey beats him out. I think Laurent will come back. He'll battle Bates for the center job. Don't want to rush McGovern.

The point I was trying to make was that even if Dowrey and/or Gaia don't start this year, going into 2016 CJF may want them back as the 2015 kids still may not be strong enough to be relied on if there is an injury. He has stated that ideally he wants RS Jr's starting to line up a big strong OL. In 2016 both Dowrey and Gaia will be big strong kids and the 2015 interior kids (Gonzalez and Bates) may not be yet. So with Mangiro graduating after this year even if Wright and Mahon start in 2016 at guard, there will be a need for mature backup. I guess it will depend on how the rest of the 2014 kids develop, Beh, Wright, Sorrell, and Brosnan, and if they can play inside. From what I have seen of Laurent he doesn't look like he will ever be the 310 lb center that CJF would like to have playing. But it would be nice for the OL if he progresses and we have an experienced Center for 2016. It will be interesting to see if a kid as good as Bates can come in and develop the strength to play B10 football (i.e. starting OL) as a RS freshman, but I don't see it happening

Regarding Dowrey, I thought he would move this Spring. But now I don't really think he will move either. I think the answer for 2016 DT depth lies with Carter and Buchholz. I'm expecting Carter to play this year. And if reports are true that he is 260+ already he could play some spot DT this year like Zettel did in his RS freshman year so that in 2016, bigger yet, he is ready to be a backup DT, in the rotation. And maybe CJF gets a JC DT kid in the 2016 class as well. So I'm also thinking that Barney pretty much has zero chance of redshirting this year.

Always leave room for a surprise or two sir!

Some excellent football discussion in this thread. Enjoying reading it. Thanks guys!

I think he meant Reinher. Reinher is a one year scholie.

Of course Palmer is coming back. I simply listed the 18 kids who will be in their final year of eligibility and "could" decide to leave early. Hack will probably leave. Gaia probably won't leave. Palmer almost assuredly won't leave. IMO there is a good chance that 6 of the 18 will leave.

I'd be surprised to see Wartman or Lynch leave early but I was surprised to see Barnes leave early.

We're about halfway through our class. Very impressive. Let's assume(We all know what that means) we sign 20. Here's my
wishlist.

1. Karamo Dioubate - DT
2. Oluwole Betiku - DE
3. Brendan Ferns - LB
4. Andrew Pryts - OLB/S
5. Cameron Brown - DE/OLB
6. Tre Nixon - WR
7. Ellison Jordan - DT

I'd like to get 2 more DT's. Obviously, Rashaun Gary is at the very top of the list. If we don't get him, Colon or Wheeler? The 4th
guy would be the JUCO if AJ leaves. Wouldn't turn Angeline down
for that 20th spot, of course. Probably, a db as that 20th guy though.

It's all about the DL line. While we're all focused on DT, rightfully so I might add. I wouldn't forget about DE. Many de's grow into DT's. I'm thinking a kid like Buchholz. Really would love to get Betiku and another DE to go with the 3 DT's whom I hope we get.

If many DEs grow into DTs then they don't need as many DT recruits.

Carter AND Givens were 258 on signing day.

I like that wish-list to fill things out.

Hamlin 7B. No need there but he can cover and has the range to move to S. I doubt Marcus Allen is here for four years (especially with the trend of guys getting a degree in 3 years).
