USA Wrestling with a round table of black wrestlers

Our very own Mark Hall joins them - interested in listening when I get a chance after work

I watched the entire video. I highly recommend it. Mark Hall mentions during his recruiting process a coach tried to paint Cael as favoring white athletes over black athletes. The unnamed coach told Mark that David Taylor won some team awards even though Ed Ruth was equally or more deserving. Mark didn't like that the coach would try to use his Mark's race in such a divisive manner (my paraphrase). Mark went on to say how far from the truth the coach's words were and how happy Mark was to have gone to Penn State.

Jordan Burroughs spoke at length, and it was impressive. He is a great ambassador for our sport.

I wonder why Mark is on record saying Tom Ryan is his least favorite coach. Partly, I’m sure it’s Aruba-gate, but maybe Ryan was trying to parrot Greg Martin’s talking points re: Ed

Haha. I’m 52 min in and JB dropped a Dakeism with everyone knowingly smiling. He didn’t bring up the Northern Latitude goofiness yet - maybe that’s too easy.

Gabe Townsell’s story is very eye opening. Can’t even imagine.

It would be unsurprising since Ohio State negatively recruited Spencer Lee.

Of course that doesn't mean Ohio State did it. Or if Ohio State did, that Ryan was the coach in question or even knew about it.

Bad tactic regardless.

I didn't realize when I first posted that the video I watched was a condensed version. I finally watched the full two hours. I would not normally take two hours out of my time to watch a round table discussion, but I think it is such an important topic. As some of you may know, I posted some lengthy posts in the
USA Wrestling's Statement on Social Justice thread before it took a little more political turn. I think the benefit of a round table discussion like this is just being able to hear in their own words and in detail some of the experiences black wrestlers have gone through. All the wrestlers did a great job in articulating their experiences. It was sad, but important, to hear of some of the racist incidents they have experienced. It was also educational to compare and contrast the experiences of a young wrestler like Mark Hall compared to an older wrestler like Kenny Monday, who is 58. I learned a lot from everything Monday had to say. Hopefully he will continue to be a great ambassador for our sport. Sometimes in times of turmoil like these the best thing you can do is sit back and really try to listen to others and hopefully learn from their experiences. I think watching a round table discussion like this is a step in the right direction. And as a teaser, if you don't watch the discussion you won't get to hear about Mark Hall's bad experience with a fan at Carver-Hawkeye Arena this last season and how it may have affected his performance against Kemerer that day.

He was over amped both Carver duals. DT talks about it vs Dake too. Keeping even keel (maybe that’s my new name for our beloved Carl) in the biggest of moments is so very tough. It’s amazing we excel at it as well as we do as a team. #ThanksBonnie
