USC getting implicated a little deeper

One would think there might be a reason (aside from abject stupidity) for these “elite” folks to use these backwater slush fund contraptions - rather than just writing out a damn check to the University.

But who knows.
Wouldn’t be the first time stupidity rules the day.... but some confounding factors could certainly be present as well.

For the most part the amounts in question weren't enough to get in the front door i.e. through the development office. The days when his father could buy Jared Kushner into Harvard for $2.5mm are gone.

I guess when they are already getting between 500k and 1million a student if they are just paying regular tuition/room/board, then 2.5 million is just a drop in the bucket. Gotta get your name on a building to buy a spot now a days.

Lynn Swann is taking huge hits and has been for several weeks now. USC athletics has been tanking. Football, basketball and USC water polo (a usc source of pride) have all had awful seasons. then you have the bribes for women's sports (who don't show up) and now this. USC is a total mess.

n 2017, USC basketball embarrassingly lost in the second round of the National Invitational Tournament. This was perhaps understandable, as the team was coming off as a major snub from the NCAA Tournament. But this season, USC missed the tournament for the second consecutive year with no argument for getting to the Big Dance. And not to mention — former assistant coach Tony Bland pled guilty to bribery and wire fraud in January, basically admitting he facilitated payments to recruits. The NCAA has yet to punish schools involved in that scandal, but they will. And when they do? Yeesh.

Of course, USC football and basketball don’t make up the entire athletic department (even though they bring in most of the dough). USC’s men’s and women’s water polo teams have been the crown jewels of Swann’s tenure. The women’s team has won two of the last three national championships and the men’s team took one home last fall.

But in March, the water polo program went from national powerhouse to national embarrassment. Legendary coach Jovan Vavic (of both the men’s and women’s teams) was indicted for allegedly taking bribes to lie about recruits in the now-infamous, Aunt Becky Admissions Scandal. The school fired Vavic immediately, ending his 16-time national championship tenure. So much for Swann’s crown jewel.

usc needs to shut down the athletic department for a few years to retool. I'm sure with the guidance of the ncaa, a highly paid consulting firm, and the appropriate monitoring, they could develop a model athletic program. It worked for Penn State.

After that advice, I hope you don’t go out and run into a tree on a clear Vermont day, on an empty country road. But if that unfortunate fate befalls you, I hope there’s a former subordinate of yours who just by happenstance is passing by and can render assistance (errr clean the scene) before the authorities arrive

Just spitballin’ here

Water Polo? Crown Jewel?

About as impactful as when Joyner fired Kaidanov of the PSU Fencing Squad.

Just an activity the University underwrites so that the AD can yap about placement in the Director's Cup (or whatever they call it nowadays)
if you read the article, you'd see that the coach, who's won several national championships coaching both men's and woman's WP wasn't just fired, he was indicted in the "aunt becky" scandal. And, if you spend time in SoCal, WP is pretty big (bigger than fencing at PSU)

USC won the Water Polo "National Championship" last year.
How many tickets did they sell... for the entire season?

Aside from the 4 Pac12 Teams that compete (USC/Cal/UCLA/and Stanford) how many major conference programs even have a Men's Water Polo program?

Seriously?
since 2000, they won 9 NCships with six runners up. Other contenders are schools like UCLA, Cal, Stanford, Pepperdine, Pacific, Long Beach State, UC Irvine, UCSB, etc. It is pretty big on the west coast. IDK, but my bet is they draw more fans than PSU's woman's softball or fencing.

And like him or not the ol' Chipster Kelly is at UCLA... He will turn that program around and fairly quick. He is a very good college coach. Last thing USC wants is Kelly stealing the headlines and getting a recruiting advantage. The pressure will continue to build on the football coach and AD at USC.

The correct answer to both questions is "0"

But, yep, its a BIG DEAL out there.
you don't know what you are talking about. My guess is you've never set foot on campus of USC, UCLA or Pepperdine. Whatevs....

How much do you think Joe kennedy donated to Harvard over the years?

Starting the "Franklin to USC" rumors now. Why wait for the AD and HC to be fired.

And - once again - they sold how many tickets to this "Big Deal"?

LOL
What is your point? I have no idea what you are arguing about. you are so pedantic. Water polo is popular on the west coast and in easter europe, specifically. But that has NOTHING to do with the point about USC and their AD. Water Polo's coach at USC got indicted. That is a big deal. You can argue all you want about how many people show up and pay for tickets. I really don't care. I am sure, it is analogous to PSU baseball, golf, softball and fencing.

The article said that the women’s water polo team is the crown jewel of Swann’s tenure. Using proper reading comprehension the author is saying that USC’s major sports have been bad under Swann, but he could point to the water polo team as an elite program. Instead of ruining another thread just learn to read.

+1. I was shocked at how popular it is when I was there.

I’m shocked at how irrelevant UCLA has become over recent decades compared to SC. Such different outcomes for 2 major schools with the same general location/ advantages.

USC football has been corrupt for decades, going back to the ‘50s and probably longer. It’s who they are, and what they do.

Here in the Philly area, we have a sports talk host - Gary Cobb - who played LB at USC in the late ‘70s and he always joked about players getting paid at USC.

All college sports should be abolished. It’s corrupt beyond salvation. But that’s a different thread so let’s leave it at that.
