Could this really happen? Virginia looks like garbage.

Oh, it's happening. Virginia's 2 losses this year came when the other team was lights out from 3 and that's what's going on tonite.

And for those elitists on this board that were comically complaining about lower conference teams getting automatic bids to the dance, well, you have this game, Marshall's win today, and Buffalo's win last night as well as a number of other tight games with the AQ conference champs as evidence as to why everyone should have the opportunity to get in.

I believe it would be the first time a 16 beat a 1.

How does it happen? Team does not take the game seriously and the opponent has a perfect game.

With 3 minutes left and down by 17 it isn't looking good for UVA.

Yeah, one time in the history of the tournament a 16 seed wins and that justifies all the other blood baths in history. Maybe UMBC should have been seeded higher.

It still shouldn't happen but losing a really important player player right before the tourney can have a drastic effect given that this isnt even going to be close

Nantz must love doing UMBC and Kansas St on Sunday. Another weekend he would rather be broadcasting golf.

UMBC lost less than a month ago at home to 12-17 Stony Brook, and lost by 44 less than 2 months ago to Albany. UMBC was justified in being a 16 seed.

The only negative is now that scumbag Calipari now has a manageable road to the final four. Hopefully not.

Very true, and the other teams who were missing starters (Missouri & Miami) are going down, too.

It was going to happen sooner or later. And it couldn't happen to a better bunch.

#1 overall seed. From the GCC - the God's Gift Conference. They got RAN by 20 and put up 54 points. They're a joke and a fraud.

This was like watching a vintage Jamie Dixon team - overcoached, tight as a drum, and hates offense - can't score. Terrible performance which they will take to their GRAVES.

Andy Katz reporting that Virginia referred to UMBC as a 'YMCA team'. Wonder what they're lipping about now?

Ok, but if the 15 and 16 seeds we’re bubble teams over the years instead of auto bids, how many games would they have won? I would say a lot more than one 16 seed and four 15 seeds.

And 1 vs 16 games are still not competitive. Ask UVA.
Or ask Xavier or Villanova. There are waaayyy more blow outs over the years than competitive games. When something happens once in history it’s an outlier not the norm.

Not sure of the biggest upset in history of sports that was it Seth Davis said? UVA laid down and UMBC played lights out a combo of that. If Princeton had beaten Georgetown back in whatever 80's yr both playing well . It was a first round game

UMBC was in the right place seed wise but maybe they shouldn't have been paired with Virginia. If the committee would use a true S curve instead of making matchups with geography in mind, then Virginia as the overall #1 should have gotten one of the Dayton teams instead of UMBC. The way they played tonite, they wouldn't have beaten University of Baltimore let alone the entire county.

And it’s not like UMBC is a 15-15 team...they have 25 wins so I don’t think it’s anywhere near the biggest upset in history.
