Went to Detroit consulate yesterday to pick up my Italian passport as a dual citizen along with 2 children. Visit to consulate went well and passports are on their way.
In visiting consulate, located in what I think is GM's headquarters in Renaissance building, I noticed several things.
1. Detroit appears to be empty. Driving in city at about 9:10 a.m. and there wasn't much traffic at all.
2. Observed many large empty spaces while driving on freeway in city.
3. Lots of real dumpy areas. (For instance trailer park with beat up trailers adjacent to large pond caused by rain, which undoubtedly floods the trailers when worse rain hits) Haven't visited Cleveland recently but seems worse than Cleveland, which is also bad.
4. Ran into a couple of very nice people in Detroit. While in Renaissance bldg someone volunteered to help us get around without us asking. Another time asked about parking and told person we were visiting and person said welcome to Detroit.
