It’s been a long, hard road for candidates Morgan, Smith, Mitchell and Paterno in even getting to the first day of balloting in the Penn State Alumni Association Alumni Council elections. It reminds me of trying to get certain classes at Penn State - you’re on a waiting list, you’re denied, you appeal, until finally you get the class and think “Now I have to actually take it? I should get an extra credit hour just for getting a seat.”

These four candidates didn’t believe Roger Williams (PSAA Executive Director) or Kevin Barron (PSAA Director of Volunteer Services) when they assured them in the fall that they didn’t need 50 signatures to get on the ballot. Last week a Centre County judge ruled they were absolutely correct.

They are joined by candidates Cluck, Kirschner, Knoll, Stanell, Werkheiser and Wilson in the belief that if alumni are writing the checks, alumni should have a voice in the Alumni Association. That the Alumni Association should not be a wholly owned subsidiary of Old Main. And that the Alumni Association should stand up for Penn State, and not be afraid to defend it.

Stop me if I'm going too far out on a limb here, but I think that when they get on Alumni Council they are going to be marginalized. They are going to be ignored. They are going to be accused of not being team players, of leaking confidential information, of disrupting the unity of the council. They better not have any hopes of sitting on the Executive Board - that’s only for Council members who are loyal to Old Main.

But that's just crazy talk.

Whatever the outcome, they have promised to speak out, to fight, and to try. That’s good enough for me.

Their website is http://psaaforall.org, and it has statements from all ten candidates who have promised to make the Penn State Alumni Association for the alumni. Voting starts today, if you are a member and did not receive an email ballot call: 800-548-5466

So is this another item where we will have to call the PSAA in order to get a ballot link? If so do you have contact info?

Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Never mind. Just saw Tom's Link in the pinned post.

Vote today.........before they change the rules!;)

Yeah, I chuckled too. Because my comments were going to be identical. If they get the most votes, why can't PSAA just change their by-laws again to say they have "final refusal" or some nonsense over who gets the most votes.

I mean, this whole crew of crooks running the state and university just loves the concept of an "ex post facto" law.

Vote Early, Vote Often...

It's been pointed out that since the by-laws were changed at the last Alumni Council meeting, this will be the last election where the alumni can vote for an open slate. The ballot-spot-by-petition option has been removed, so in the future the only candidates on the roster will be those approved by the PSAA Nominating Committee.

Are we being disenfrancised much?

It's appalling. I've never heard of a membership organization that doesn't have some kind of mechanism for taking nominations "from the floor" or from the general membership. It's disgusting.

I sent the following to PSAA a while ago.

Received my ballot notification today. Attempted to vote. There was no space for me to exercise my right to enter a write-in candidate. Please inform me when the web voting has been corrected and/or send me a paper ballot so that I may exercise my right to vote for whoever I wish to represent me on the alumni council.

Got my ballot and voted for the 10 good guys mentioned. Let's get these people in there and hopefully turn things around. I am a life member and throw all new PSU Alumni Association mail in the trash now. Totally disenfranchised with the Alumni Association. I was the treasurer for our local chapter and have no interest supporting anything the Alumni Association does now

Went to Ireland for the game through reservations myself as I will not spend a nickel to support the current lap dogs for the BOT

Hoping for change of an AA that represents the alumni
