Was the final hit on KJ Hamler targeting? *

Looked like it could have been but I can’t tell. It’s such a new and seemingly fluid penalty that It’s hard to tell on the no-calls. Certainly there was helmet to helmet contact, looked pretty direct and hard and hamler was a wrapped-up sitting duck.

Seemed he really took a knock. After he way laying there that long, I was really worried about his head. All the celebrating afterwards w people hitting him in the head made me cringe. But he seemed fine after he got up so made me wonder if he was laying there trying to draw a penalty.

....and UM plays ND next week so gotta assume that may have been a factor.

No. Was not crown, was side of helmet. If you look at replay you will see KJ got his head sandwiched between UM helmets on both of sides but neither were crown of helmet hits.

My understanding is that you're not allowed to hit someone in the head, period, whether it's with your helmet, shoulder, or even arm. But apparently officials can do whatever they choose from one game to the next!

My recollection from two or three years ago when PSU was playing M and was really short on LBs, a PSU LB was ejected for targeting. Replays showed the LB was going for the ball and the crown of the M player's helmet HIT THE SIDE of the LB's helmet. Watching the direction both players were moving, the M player hit the PSU player, but the LB was ejected. The BIG admitted it was a bad call.

Yep. Brandon Smith. Going for an interception and called for targeting. One would hope with the new rule that targeting must be confirmed by replay that that call would have been overturned. But Pat Freirmuth clearly had the ball across the goal line before his knee hit and, well, we all know how that went...so who knows.

I don't even know what the heck targeting is, along with pass interference and holding. It seems "situational" if that makes sense. I re-watched the game last night and it looked to me like the M player lead with his shoulder.

Not sure anyone knows. After any contested pass play when we're on defense, my eyes immediately go to the score box in the corner of the TV to see if the yellow "Flag" image pops up.

I did the same thing in the stadium. I happened to be walking behind the bench when KJ ran past me and instinctively knew there would be a flag on the return.

One thing is, I'm glad it wasn't called. Meaningless to our game at the time, and I want Michigan at full strength for the ND game.
