Way OT: Anyone ever use California Closets?

I haven't personally used them but a lot of friends etc have and I'm amazed at how expensive they are relative to what you get.

If you have a conceptual layout of what you want, a finish carpenter can do the same thing for about 60-70% of what CC will charge you. Further, you'll probably be able to incorporate some custom features and get better quality materials.

Thanks.

or some other closet organizing entity? I have to get this done in my house.
(Looking forward to some smart ass comments from the peanut gallery on this one).
I was tempted, but I'll leave this hanging curveball to someone else.

Ro - you got a 'guest' moving in?

We have CC in our walk-in. We didn't have them installed, they were there when we bought the house. They look nice, but they are MDF with veneer skins. We have a few spots where the veneer is peeling, we have been in the house for 8 years. I haven't looked into them to see if they offer better quality materials.

If you are going to go the finish carpenter route, make sure you get pictures of work they have done and they provide references.

Be careful, you might need some protection. You never know what might crawl out of a California closet. It might be something like Keith Olbermann.

No, no guest. I am "re-nesting" in my house.

I was thinking of getting a second place in Myrtle Beach or someplace like that. When I ran the numbers, it was do-able to put a downpayment, mortgage, taxes, HOA, etc. However, when I factored in the "soft" costs, like travel to/from, furniture, utilities and the fact that if I went somewhere else on vacation, I would feel like I was losing money on the MB place....and I have no desire to get into the landlord/renter game...I decided to put money back into my house. So far, I have built a pergola, invested in some new furniture, and am looking to upgrade the bathroom soon. So, the closets are also part of that. So, it's "re-nesting".

Considered them in the past, but did not follow through on a contract with them. This company has a big name and advertising, but expensive for what you have as a finished product and not the best quality. As another poster has said, use a good finish carpenter with a schematic of your design -- if you have room, a center island of drawers will give you space to move the dresser out of the bedroom. The quality for the long term is not with CC.

Ask and you shall receive.....

Use CA closets whenever I travel to Newport Beach or La Quinta.....my closets here at home are full of IL-fitting clothes. :D

I'd highly recommend buying the "Pax" system at IKEA. You'll get more options and functionality at half the cost.

Was going to suggest Ikia, also. The OP has built things so assembly and installation will not be a challenge for him. I remodeled my kitchen with Ikea cabinets several years ago, and they look great and have held up very well. Ikea is a good compromise between quality and price, i.e., an excellent value.

I'd recommend Dean Profit for the job. He has good references
