This board has always been a great source for random knowledge.

Just went through a divorce so I won't have much need for my wedding ring anymore. Does anyone know the best place to sell a wedding ring? Can't remember what it's made of w/o digging out the paperwork, but think it was in the $500 range. I know I'm not going to get anywhere near that, which is fine.

Thanks in advance!

Craigslist, have the paperwork that came with it ready for the sale. Don't accept an offer where you meet up and they offer you half what you agreed upon over email.

My girlfriend's ex husband still wears his wedding ring 4 year after their divorce.
Says he made a commitment for life. He has psychological problems, and needs to see a therapist.

Oh, back on topic - Probably not much of a market, but craigslist or a pawn shop might be your best bets.

I actually need to sell a ~$12k Tiffany engagement ring. I'd like to get $5-6k out of it, any idea if that is realistic? Was probably worn 10-15 times 4-5 years ago (engagement only lasted a few months).

You could try to sell it to your girlfriend's ex-husband. Worth a shot?

if you really want to sell it, I would go to a jewelry shop that does estate sales. I'd ask them how it works, and maybe they will just buy it. You wont get top dollar, but most likely you will get something, and be done with it. Maybe they would even have a trade for something nice!!

I was in the same situation as you a couple of years ago. Here is what I learned. A jeweler is probably the best place to get the most for your gold with the least hassle.

Take it to a jeweler that buys jewelry and see what they will give you for it. Ask them to also tell you the weight. Take it to 2 or 3 different jewelers to compare offers and to compare the weight to make sure it's accurate. Keep in mind jewelers use a different scale called penny weight. You can look up how to convert that to grams or ounces. You can also google the current price of gold. Given all that information you can calculate the value of your ring.

Of course, you will not get the full value of the ring because the jeweler has to make a profit. From what I've read, you can expect to get anywhere from 60% to 80% of the full value.

In my case, the basic gold band I bought about 25 years ago (which, if I recall, cost somewhere in the $300 to $400 range) was only going to get me about $100. I decided to hold onto it.

My wife got pretty upset when I tried to sell mine.

In actuality, I bought my wedding ring for $20 on Amazon...so not much resale value.

I would go see what a jewelry shop would pay you for it, then go try to sell it on Ebay for more than that. If you can't, then head back to the jewelry shop.

Were I you, I'd melt it down and keep the gold/silver. Chances are the gold value is worth more than when you bought the ring and anyone looking for a ring will likely melt it down and recast anyway.

Ebay. Ebay has the best value for selling. Craigslist people will just waste your time.

You should be able to get 50% value or a little more on eBay for your engagement ring.

I wore my wedding ring on my wedding day and haven't had it on since. Not even sure where it is to be honest.

I have no experience selling a wedding band on eBay, but I'm looking on there now and there are tons listed, most have no bids. I'm guessing you won't do well there, but maybe worth giving it a try.

Never settle for less than melt value! A man's wedding ring is usually gold or platinum. It's worth its weight...literally.

60-80% of retail? Fat chance.

You can trade it In on a new watch at most any jewelry store. Value is probably just the weight of the gold. Would get a little more on a trade, but you know how that works.

I was specifically talking about the Tiffany engagement rings. The melt value of those is pretty low. Tiffany engagement rings go for 2-3 times an equivalent non Tiffany ring.

On ebay they seem to trade for about half of retail.

Mens bands agree. that's all in the metal.

Yeah...the high end stuff has artistic value, though 50 cents on the dollar makes one wonder about the initial investment. It's a shame insurance fraud is illegal. :)

Check ebay - maybe your wife put it up for sale.

I hope she did. I told her to just get some aluminum foil and make it into a ring since I would never be wearing it anyway. Honestly, I'm not sure the one she bought is worth much less than the aluminum foil.

I lasted about 3 days. I've never worn jewelry and couldn't stand having it on my finger. Finally told my wife I couldn't wear it and put it back in the box. (I do know where it is)
My wife was steamed for about a week, then got over it. That was well over 30 years ago and the subject has never come up again. My wife takes off her engagement ring often, but never takes off the wedding band.

Are you the ex husband?

I did wear it on a necklace with a crucifix for awhile but after that chain broke I never replaced it.

And, if you melt it, you can use it to manufacture ammo in preparation for the coming apocalypse. If the apocalypse doesn't occur by the time you retire, you can make some of the coolest fishing sinkers around and the "green" folks will appreciate the low lead content keeping the trout population pure for consumption. ;)

Wear my wedding ring every day... only time I take it off is when I am in the shower, working on the car, or doing anything where the ring may get caught or crushed. Wife picked mine out and she nailed it. 100% me and my personality.

Never took mine off while I was married. Got divorced and my finger felt naked, so to speak, for a few months, but I got over it.
