...planning a family vacation there early December, taking our married kids and our grandkids...my one son-in-law who is with the DOJ in Washington has us all concerned over possible cartel kidnapping or worse.
Question is: Anyone familiar with the area? We've had nothing but the highest praises from people we're friendly with here in SW Fla...we would fly into Houston...then to Leon...and by van ride for about 1-1.5 hrs to San Miguel de Allende.
Thanks in advance for the help.

have to ask, of all the places to go in Mexico, why there??

Adults can make their own decisions but taking kids there is irresponsible. Why not go someplace safer...like Syria?

Simply because it's an artsy fartsy resort town that IS family friendly...several different friends from Ft. Myers had the absolute best most relaxing vacation there...wanted feedback from people familiar with the town, not critics who rant about moralistic b.s., not even in the know re the town itself.

I would not go anywhere in Mexico. A friend and his wife were murdered on their honeymoon and there are too many great places to go in this country.

I wasn't trying to be a critic, I've been to Mexico recently, and I would not worry too much if I was going to a resort town on the coast, Cancun, Cozumel, Playa-del-carma etc and I've even taken a van ride down thru Mexico, which was a blast on to itself!! That said, taking a van ride in the interior of Mexico would give me pause right now. As someone said in our van ride, think about it, there is more net worth in our luggage then there is in some towns in Mexico!! We weren't in the central part, so we didn't even worry, we were Mexicans didn't even want to live there!

On vacations I like to be around the water, and not land locked, but maybe that's me. I hope you have a great time.

This place looks like a must stop for me in the near future. One piece of advise; when in third world countries always carry a wallet that has some fake ID and about $30 or so in cash. If you get robbed give them the wallet. Have the women leave their purses at home.
Have fun on your trip...I'm jealous.

Here is a good article about SMA:
