My first time in Beaver Stadium was Joe's first game against Maryland (I know a million people say they were there). In the early years, I remember listening to games on my transistor radio in my back yard trying pick up a Beaver Falls station because KDKA preempted the Nits for Pirates baseball. I lived through the glory of the 70's and 80's, and followed the team in the many years since, generally happy with the competitive teams and the good ones like 1994 and 2005, even without the national championships. I moved to So Cal and still kept season tickets. Then Sandusky. After The Firing, we got O'Brien and watched him hold the team together. We also got some ups and downs. We got Ohio U and Virginia but also triple OT against UM and the Wisconsin games that keep us hoping. Franklin came in with the same crew that went 9-4 in the SEC. Donovan was a very capable OC, Herb Hand was a solid O line coach. We were excited and probably overly optimistic. No more ups and downs instead we have consistency, consistent mediocrity. No signature wins. Losses to Indiana and Temple for the first time ever. Blow out losses to MSU and trying to keep the score respectable against the big guys. Our best game was a loss, in OT to OSU, but still a loss. We still talk about the sanctions and its impact and debate about Hack's handling and contribution. Now we have coaches leaving for lateral positions. So what now? Franklin will have his quarterback. We'll have three years with the same core in the O line. The D line was a challenge, but its time for some people to step up. Both in the locker room and in the coaching offices. I am not looking for ten wins, but we need better than 7-6 again. And even if are not numerically much better, we need to be in every game and have a chance to win. We need to get better each week. It's time for the big check to start producing bigger returns.
