We need to set a goal of having 10 National Champions. Why Not ? Set

I believe Nolf will follow DT's path at nationals. Four finals starting at 157 and ending up at 165. However, I also believe he will follow Ed Ruth's performance in winning 3 national titles.

9.9 sch. means not possible, unless you can convince the other 25 kids to take zero.

I'll predict Psu has 2 Champs this year-125, 149 and a finalist at 197. At 174 and 157 we get to the semis before losing. This will add up to another Team Title.

I think Mac has just as good of a shot at winning it as mega does with the way 97 clears out.

I think Zain up a weight class can win a National title also... Beating Tsirtsis from NW and Soronsen from Iowa won't be as hard as beating Logan Stieber his freshman year.

Agreed,I wasn't sure where JDen Cox was going this year? Any official word? Even though I realize Mac beat him last year , I would favor Cox if returning to 197.

With Brewer potentially staying put, 141 is wide open. If Jimmy G. adjusts to that weight properly, we may very well see him in the finals. I don't see a wrestler there he can't beat. Not saying it's going to be easy, but comparatively speaking 133 has been a meat grinder his first two years.

I thought I had read that he was going hwt this year but maybe I'm misremembering.

Speculation only. Same rumors were out there last year, as well as the possibility he would redshirt to make the transition. So we're left to wonder if he; 1) goes 197, 2) goes 285, or 3) takes a RS.

I haven't read anything more substantive than "maybe Cox finally goes heavy this year" or "maybe he shirts this year to go heavy next year." Nothing particularly inside or insightful. Just the long-running general feeling that he's someday destined to heavy.

Quite possible I've missed something, and others are probably following it more closely than I am.

I've also seen the same mindless drivel this summer about Snyder. "He's finally gotta go heavy in 2017 -- he's gotta bulk up for the Olympics." The same folks think Tony Ramos needs to add weight to compete at 121 lb.

Season can't start soon enough.

Roar, when was the last time a team with 3 Individual Champs in a year didn't win Team Title? Thanks for any info on that or if anyone else knows if that's ever happened .

Yeah either way he should be in the finals. I'm also curious to see how Nickal does at 74 with the way that clears out.

How about Cornell in 2012? I believe they had Dake, Bosak, and Simaz win championships, but PSU won the Championship.

I haven't gone back and checked other years but that shows it's not only not a guarantee of winning the team title Cornell was 4th that year.

Add Iowa State in 2002 finishing 2nd to Minnesota and Oklahoma finishing 3rd in 1982 to Iowa & Iowa State. Probably more to come.

A bunch more. Wisconsin 4th in 1976, MSU 2nd in 1972, OK State 4th in 1970, Oklahoma 2nd in 1969 and Iowa State 2nd in 1968. I'll let someone else did thru the older years.

Thanks for the work guys. Interesting

Yeah guys...great job!! Just got home from work, and only now saw this post. I'll add Okie State (2nd) in 1965, Oklahoma (2nd) in 1962, Pitt (2nd) in 1957, Northern Iowa (2nd all 3 years) in 1949 & 1947 & 1946, Michigan State (2nd) in 1942...and that takes us all the way back to 1928, the first year of NCAA Sanctioned Championships.

Thanks Roar. I went back as far as I could before work intervened. :)

Turns out it happened a LOT more often that I would have guessed.

Don't forget Clarion in 1973, with Rohn, Schalles, and Simpson winning individual titles.

Yeah, they may get an asterisk because they weren't eligible for team scoring, but what an accomplishment for the Golden Eagles.

IIRC, Clarion only took 4 wrestlers to nationals and finished top 5.

Jefe, personal question. About feelings. (On the internet? Not possible!) (and if you look closely, you'll notice it's a variation on an old saw, but eff it: it's the offseason).

How do you feel about this being possible? That the Clarion Team finished as one of the Top 5 Teams? With only 4 wrestlers? Is it still a 'team?' Is its Team better than the Teams with 10 wrestlers who placed behind them?

A couple of points/questions. First, Clarion did not finish top 5 as they were a D were a DII team and not eligible for team score as noted by royboy. Second, what do you mean by 10 wrestlers who "placed" behind them? To place did they need to be AA, because that didn't happen or do you mean 10 wrestlers that qualified for NCAAs? How high do you think a team should place if they qualify all 10 wrestlers for NCAAs and none of them reach AA and or none of them even win a match?

Another point, Clarion did have a "team" of 10 wrestlers, they just didn't all qualify for NCAAs. Same thing happens to almost every team at the D1 level every year. IMHO, that doesn't make them any less of a team.

What Nova said, except I was too lazy to type on my phone "they unofficially scored enough points to place in the top 5 if their points had counted." They finished in the top 5 whether the NCAA chose to recognize it or not.

I know what the real question is, and I'm not opening that Pandora's box.

So who wants to "play the odds" and put some percentages next to our lineup? I would like to see who are the odds on favorites to win a National Title. I would think Morgan, Nico, and Zain would top the list but after that it gets interesting. Especially since we have not seen the young guys compete much and there is still a lot to be told.

125 - Nico - national champ
133 - Conaway - R12 or low AA
141 - Gulibon - mid AA
149 - Zain - finalist, possible champ
157 - Nolf - mid AA, possible finalist
165 - Rasheed/Hammond/Beitz - NQ, 2-2
174 - Nickal - R12 or low AA
184 - McCutcheon - R12 (all 8 medalists return)
197 - McIntosh - finalist, possible champ
285 - Nevills - mid AA

Going conservative until I see how weights shake out across the country.

So 6-8 AAs and 3-4 finalists, with at least one champ. I'll take that! :)
