Let my dog out last night before bed. I was really beat, couldn't wait to get to bed. We just recently moved to a new house on some acreage and my dog has been chasing other dogs off our property a few times the past couple weeks.

So I was annoyed by not surprised when he tore off barking towards the woods when I let him out. I called him and he started coming back, but as he got closer I could hear him breathing through his nose, and then saw the foam hanging from his mouth. And then the smell hit. This skunk just nailed him right in the mouth. So after 3 hours of running to the store, buying hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, lemon juice, vinegar, tomato sauce, shampoo, etc and then lathering him and rinsing repeatedly, I finally got to bed.

He's going to be spending some quality time in the garage for the next couple days. We had a german shepherd years ago that got into skunks regularly, but this was the worst one I've ever smelled.

Clear indicator that it's officially spring.

How long does the smell last? I've had several close encounters with skunks while jogging at night but I've never been sprayed.

Re: Well, spring is here............ I don't want to hijack your post, but

my father used to say smelling skunks and dead skunks on the road were the first signs of spring. Next, he would say the arrival of Red Winged Blackbirds were the true sign spring had sprung.
BTW, we had Robins in our neighborhood in January and was told they don't all leave the area.

Good luck with the skunk issue. Sister had 4 - 5 acres in the West Chester area only to experience similar issues with their lab.

Only supports my adversity to letting dogs lick me!

They like to lick other things, too! My wife claims dogs' mouths are germ-free or harmless or something to that effect. I don't buy it! I do admit that millions of dog owners do kiss their dogs and are alive and healthy, so probably just a phobia of mine.

Here's how we can tell spring is here in South Florida...

What did the Judge say when a skunk entered the Courtroom?

Odor in the Court!

Re: Good morning Mr Emmert***

My wife says that that's an insult to the skunk....
