And I actually wore a Penn State sweatshirt.

IF. YOU. CAN’T. GO. TO. COLLEGE. , GO. TO. STATE. .

They walk smarter, talk smarter, drink lattes smarter. I was lost in my murky sea of dumbery. A few of the smarties were ready to stone me over the sweatshirt, but they decided the stones deserved better. They’ll save them for Harvard.

Me so dumb. I hate me. :(

If they're so smart, why did they put the school in New Jersey?

That's weird. I was there today and saw some dumb-looking guy walk by.

Princeton has a beautiful campus and the downtown area is pretty quaint. Nice little restaurant there called Medi-Terra - good cocktails and great bacon wrapped stuffed dates for apps.
The Bluepoint Grill and Elements in Princeton are two of my favorite haunts. Bluepoint has a raw oyster menu which changes daily and features about 10 different varieties from all over the USA and Canada. Their grilled bronzino is to die for. Elements has a small plate tasting menu weeknights featuring four courses and is very pricey ($85 without the wine). There is a lot of wealth in that town, and a lot of it is old money. CEOs live there and work in Manhattan. I knew a man who as a child was Einstein’s next door neighbor there (Mercer Street). Ro - the Nassau Inn serves a nice cocktail as well in the Yankee Doodle Taproom. It’s where the well heeled ladies lunch. State College is Pennsyltucky compared to Princeton.

My wife worked as an accountant for the owners for a few years in the late 90s.

You felt dumb which led to the thread about the Giants asking Barkley for his opinion on Eli. You’re having a rough day today.:)

I lived in that area for about 7 years, played pick up basketball on the weekends in the Princeton gym. I liked the area, everything is nice, in only problem is it is sleepy little area on weekends as it is NYC bedroom community and stepping stone for many. I lived in South Jersey for 4 years and really liked that.

Was there any discussion on tax refunds and/or tax cuts? That seems to be a big point of confusion.

Did you ever eat at Hoagie Haven or Contee’s Pizza?
I lived in Plainsboro. One day my good college friend quit his job as an a accountant at J&J, bought the Aljohn's in Highstown, grew it, sold it, moved back to northeast Ohio and started a chain of about a dozen pizzerias he owned and another dozen franchised, Romeo's, sold that for millions.

Hoagie Haven had a bunch of health code violations, at least when I lived there. Last time I was there, my senior year of hs, I watched a guy put shredded lettuce out with bare hands and a bloody cut on his finger. Stopped going after that, hard image to forget.

On a side note, I was amused to see a Penn Medical School facility on Route 1 near Princeton. If Princeton folks were so smart, they’d figure out how to have a medical school. Even Penn State figured that out.

Penn and Jefferson have bought up many of the healthcare facilities and practices which are in the broad Philadelphia suburban area. It’s a race to see who winds up becoming the largest. The one you refer to on Rt 1 used to be the Princeton Plainsboro Medical Center. It’s a lucrative area for Doctors because of all the wealthy insured patients and a good business strategy.

Rutgers was handed UMDNJ on a platter by our former Governor Chris Christie. While I’m not 100% certain I think it’s far more difficult for a private University to be directly affiliated with a medical school, that includes an Ivy League school. In other words, the state of New Jersey subsidizes Rutgers through appropriations to help alleviate the cost of running the medical school. Princeton would not have that luxury.

A colleague of mine taught a course evenings at Princeton as a adjunct professor. She was given an office on campus to share and her office mate turned out to be Ben Bernanke. It’s a different world there.

Teaching hospitals are big time money makers.

I lived there for 4 yrs in the late 80’s (not a student or grad student). Every time I dropped the “I went to Penn State” line I always got a smug response.

I had a great time living in town. I met my wife there on a blind date. She wasn’t a Princeton student either.
Princeton is a nice area and quite obviously a great school. But they sure are smug. Next time you get the smug response, ask if Princeton are gaining ground on PSU for number of CEOs or most employable graduates? Encourage them to keep trying and maybe tbey’ll get there! I have found Princeton grads to be a bit short on real world applications. Supervised a Princeton gentleman a few years back working for a publisher. Nice fellow but had no idea on how to compete for authors. Worked with another Princeton guy who was a top customer. Again, nice enough fellow, but got wrapped around the axle was on things that were not relevant. Finally reported to a CEO from Princeton. Incredibly smug and could create a terrific PowerPoint. But had no idea on how to lead or to add value to an organization. Sucked up the CEO perks though!

If you need to feel better about your pedigree, I’m a dumb PSU engineering grad that has grads from Penn, Cornell, Columbia and the US Naval Academy reporting to me. None from Princeton (yet) but I’m looking to hire so maybe I’ll look to add a Tiger to my team.

A year or two ago, Penn State hosted Princeton for a men’s hockey game. A student had a sign that read, “Guy likes us better.” I wish I could find a picture of that sign.

Well, that sounds gay. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

See, here’s what Ive noticed. Yeah, Princeton students seem smart, and they are. But, more than that, what they really are is very mature and focused. These are great qualities to have, but at the end of the day, other folks will grow into these qualities, too. So, Princeton kids are just kind of precocious, but not inherently and irreversibly better.

Um, the mathematics graduate students are better than those you’d find just about anywhere else. Those folks would absolutely blow me away.

Well, I guess, but I’m not talking about grad students.

And you got Barchi in the bargain so it evened out.

It depends, there are so many factors that go into running a successful medical school. If the teaching hospital is located in a somewhat wealthy area with a well insured population it will do well. Have your teaching hospital in Camden NJ and you will fold.
