Referring to Mike Schmidt:

"You're trying your damndest, you strike out and they boo you. I act like it doesn't bother me, like I don't hear anything the fans say, but the truth is I hear every word of it and it kills me."

"If you're associated with the Philadelphia media or town, you look for negatives. I don't know if there's something about their upbringing or they have too many hoagies, or too much cream cheese."

"Philadelphia is the only city, where you can experience the thrill of victory and the agony of reading about it the next day."

I swear that the program's success is turning our fan base into Philly fans.

You could tell that by the way nobody booed at the BJC yesterday or by the relentlessly positive media coverage of the team?

One-tenth of one percent of the fans spend time on message boards. One-tenth of one percent of the message board crowd has negative things to say about the team after a win. Mike Schmidt is not impressed.

I live here and call them Negadelphians. It seems to me that most of us don't have that many avenues to release our personal frustrations. Sports is certainly one major outlet.

Not sure I understand the purpose of this thread...but I'll play along and offer a data-point. Those of us that have been around the longest (I go back to the early 70's, and some on here go back to the 50's), for the most part are extremely grateful...and positive...about the recent success. We were pretty good before Cael, but we're in territory now that we only dreamed about. Really hard for me to think of a single harsh word to say about our wrestlers, coaches, really anyone involved in Penn State Wrestling.

HR is and has been an interesting animal. Attacks on the individual wrestlers is at least partially permitted, but Brands is off limits for the most part. Great information over there, but very thin skinned group to say the least. PSU fans seem a happier bunch imo, but that is probably more a product of recent success than anything else.
I have noticed a few more jabs aimed at the few guys in the lineup who are not likely to become high AA. I hate this from a personal level having been a weak link at the D1 level myself. I think people forget how good you have to be to become the worst wrestler in the PSU or Iowa lineup. Rare air to say the least. I hope support is offered to all of the student athletes competing in this sport at all of the schools. Sorry- off the soap box and back to the coffee.

We are becoming more like Pittsburgh Steeler fans. We accept an occasional set back. But come crunch time, we know we will be in the hunt for another championship :)

I like this better!

Philly is on a level all to itself and I think they like it that way.

Exactly. And you don't have to go back that far to be grateful for this run. There were lots of spotty years in the 20 before Cael got here where just getting an All-American or two was considered a major accomplishment. To me, the most frustrating part was watching all of the PA talent go elsewhere to wrestle ... home grown talent that didn't see PSU as a place to realize their dreams.

The potential was always there if the right coach was found ... I'm grateful every single day for what we have and don't dwell on the bumps in the road.

Just like all fan bases, some are fans of the sport and the team, some are fair weather followers, and some are just pr*cks

Entire thread is weak. Any coach who wins 4 consecutive titles in Philly would walk on water. The ground would open up and swallow the city if that ever happened.

Hell, Philly worships Dick Vermeil for merely getting to the Super Bowl.

How many MVPS did mike Schmidt win? How many Gold Gloves? Over 500 home runs when 500 was really rare. Entire career a Phillies and was booed more times than he hit a round tripper.
They might like Dick, but they can certainly be brutal with their Hall of Fame athletes. Which I think is the reason for the offered analogy.

Some do but who are we to judge.

... a weak link at the D1 level ...
The thing to remember about "weak links" is that we should be grateful they are there, because they are the strongest link available to the team, as determined by the coach. Every "weak link" is essentially a Jan Johnson, who is there plugging a hole (to mix metaphors) that would otherwise go to an even weaker link.

The Philly fan thing is often played out in my eyes. I doubt Schmidt was booed more times than he hit a HR. That just sounds like nonsense.

I don't see us becoming Philly though because some people are concerned about our national title chances this year.

Philly fan theme is beyond cliche.

Why don't we just focus on who/what we are as PSU fans? I have yet to see fans tell any wrestler to dump his girlfriend because she's a distraction, so IMO we're better than we used to be.

You must have forgotten that spyker did exactly that back in Q's redshirt soph year when he had injured his shoulder in the semis of the NLO, and he did it OVER and OVER again.

Or, maybe I forgot to use the words "this year" and was trying to not single him out.

spyker took MANY personal attacks on Q and Lauren that were and are unforgiveable and he has been completely unrepentant about it. That is not something I am likely to forget or forgive any time soon.

Exactly. He wasn't

Also, I've literally never met a person who has met Mike Schmidt and came away with anything good to say about him.

One such person is my father. Who through his job met and became cordial with the likes of Richie Ashburn, Dr J, Mo Cheeks, Gary Maddox, dick vermeil and he became pretty good friends with Charles Barkley. The only one I ever heard him say was a prick was Schmidt.

I sat with Pete Rose on a flight once. I asked him who his favorite players from that era were, and practically before I could get the question out, he said, "Mike Schmidt." I guess depending upon how you feel about Pete could influence how you interpret that story.
Funniest thing about that flight was, as soon as he sat down beside me, he had the box scores open. I refrained from asking who he had money on.

Disagree. I see nearly unanimous support on this board. Saying we need to improve at certain weights is not destructive, nor is it non supportive.

Yeah. Pete might not be the best character reference lol

Ironically my Dad loved Schmidt until he met him. It was at a grand opening of a new Pat Croce rehab facility. The 3 stars there were Barkley, Tim Kerr and Michael Jack. My Dad was a cop working the detail.

A few years later he worked part time at a gated community that Barkley lived in. My Dad absolutely loved Charles. I got to meet him as a kid after a Lakers game where he got my whole family center court tickets.

Schmidt was my hero as a kid; great player. I don't remember him ever getting booed but maybe it happened earlier in his career before I was old enough to follow the team. The only player I can recall getting booed on a regular basis was Lance Parrish.

Since we are talking Phillies, my all time favorite team was in 1993. Nobody dared to boo them or guys like Dalton, Dykstra and Incaviglia would of went into the stands, lol.
